Ten Years Later, Half Life 3 Still Doesn’t Exist

ep3sm

It’s been ten years since Valve announced Half Life 2: Episode 3 and the internet is pretty much convinced that the game will never be made. Originally conceived back when episodic gaming was nowhere near as prevalent as it is in this post-Telltale world, Valve hoped that splitting one giant game (Half Life 3) into three parts and releasing them episodically would shorten the wait between releases.

The idea worked, at the start. Half Life 2 launched November 2004 with Lost Coast bridging the gap in October 2005, Episode 1 in June 2006 and Episode 2 in October 2007. It was a big change from the wait between Half Life 1 and 2, a problematic development cycle that saw a six year wait.

But even the wait between Half Life and Half Life 2 seems like small beans compared to the ten year wait that players have endured just for the small confirmation that Valve is even working on the title. In that time, Steam has grown to become a platform more profitable than Google. We’ve seen Valve launch several titles, a lucrative skin market for multiple games, mold their games for eSports, run numerous high profile tournaments, launch a hardware brand, VR, and more.

And yet, despite this massive success, the company refuses to comment on Half Life.

The lack of information coming from Valve has only fueled the speculation on why Half Life 3 hasn’t been fully announced. Is it because they are making too much money elsewhere? Because they waited too long and believe that the game missed its mark? Or because they are waiting for major engine updates to Source? Or because they’re figuring out a way to add microtransactions to a single player game?

Either way, we’re looking at the tenth anniversary since Valve announced the next Half Life 2 game with just as much information as we had ten years ago.

Webzen Celebrates 7 Years With A Giveaway

WEBZEN_7th_Anniversary_website

MMO Fallout has partnered with Webzen to celebrate the publisher’s seventh anniversary, and what better way to celebrate than by giving out heaps of free items? Starting now, you can head to the bottom of this page and nab yourself a key. That key is good for a bundle of free items on any of the Webzen games listed below: ASTA, ELOA, RAPPELZ, MU Online, and FLYFF. Each game comes with its own package of goods.

Today’s giveaway is a little different than what you might be used to seeing here at MMO Fallout. Each key is universal and can only be applied once to an account, so for the sake of not letting keys go to waste with people ignoring this to grab doubles, the giveaway is IP locked. You can’t apply more than one key to your account, even if you play more than one game on the list, it won’t work. The keys are good until May 31st, so if you’re having some trouble deciding which game to use yours on, you have some time.

Check below for the redemption instructions as well as what goods go with which game. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page for the key link.

Redemption instructions:

  • Go to http://webzen.com/events/anniversary/7/redeem

RuneScape Classic Open To All Again

screen-1

In celebration of RuneScape’s 15th birthday, Jagex has once again made the oldest iteration of the game available to the public. Starting today and running through mid-March, players can log in and secure themselves indefinite access to the classic servers with all of their old school glory. Your account from RuneScape won’t transfer over, so if you haven’t played before you’ll be starting over.

The availability of RuneScape Classic is limited to current RuneScape members. If you are a member and wish to take advantage of the open window, head over to the official page and log in with your current RuneScape account from 11 January at 12:00 UTC until 11 March at 12:00 UTC. Once you’ve made a character, you will have access to RuneScape Classic whenever you want to play it.

RuneScape Classic remains online for the remaining community that continue playing as well as players who would like to see how the game looked pre-2004. Due to the ease of cheating, the game is mostly closed off to the public with small windows of time where new players can obtain access. The last time that the servers were open to new players was 2011, at which time Jagex claimed that the game would not be opened to the public again. Whether the current event is a one-off exception is unknown.

Defiance Armistice Begins Tomorrow

Defiance 2014-08-06 00-57-47-32

To celebrate Defiance’s two year anniversary, Trion Worlds is running a month long Armistice event. The events, which begin tomorrow and run through April 20th, will revisit the past two years worth of holidays and special events, with players given the opportunity to scoop up some gear they might have missed the first time around.

Throughout the festival you can scoop up past holiday loot and rewards plus new Mark II Crimefighter, Bloodhound, and Gangbuster weapons from Defiant Few faction contracts. (The original Defiant Few weapons are still available via their vendor’s Defiant Few Legacy Supply Crate, too!)

Defiance launched in 2013 alongside the television show, and has since seen countless updates, five DLC packs, and twenty five episodes. The next big update, Alcatraz, is currently on the public test server. Season 3 of Defiance begins this year.

Age of Conan Turns Six

AoC_Anniversary_2014_1

Age of Conan turns six years old, and Funcom is celebrating by launching the Shadows of the Past event and Festival of Bloodshed. Shadows of the Past tasks players with uncovering a plot to bring down King Conan and will take them on a trip down memory lane to where it all began: Tortage island. Festival of Bloodshed introduces a new PvP system where players participate in week-long events each month. The system includes new PvP quests, new events, rewards, and a companion who taunts nearby players based on their number of PvP deaths.

I hope I don’t come across this companion.
