Mortal Online Compensation Coming

Currently offline...

To expect an MMO to launch with no down time is ridiculously out of line. Despite the utilization of closed beta, open beta, and finally head start, the servers that run an MMO are usually ground down to the core in the opening month. Lag, random crashes, and more plague the game and launch issues are so common that the rule of thumb with MMOs is that those who are not patient should not become early adopters.

Now, I may come off as being a little more brute than necessary. Server crashes are often fixed in the first few days of launch, and lag disperses as players move out from more crowded areas. Occasionally, however, the server hits hurdles that bring the game down on a regular basis. As a recent example, Darkfall last year had a several month period where it was virtually impossible to buy the game. Those of you who remember World of Warcraft’s launch are probably in the fetal position underneath your desks right now. In many of these cases, the developers ask for the hand of forgiveness by compensating players for lost game-time.

Mortal Online’s servers have not been doing well since launch, and saying that is an understatement. Maerlyn, of Star Vault, announced that there is compensation coming for players, that is being decided by management. While they are still working on fixing the server stability issues, for now the servers will be staffed all day long in order to allow for a manual reboot in the case of a crash, which will cut down on the duration the servers are offline following a crash.

Mortal Online: June 9th! We Swear!

Oh Henrik...

Mortal Online, like many indie MMOs, is no stranger to delays. Out of a rabid attempt at fighting back the de-synchronization issues that have plagued Mortal Online for months, Star Vault has pushed back the title month after month until they could finally defeat this beast that knows no enemy. Luckily, however, Star Vault has appeared to come out victorious, announcing that:

“With the new engine build, we have finally solved the desync issues we suffered from in the old network solution. Earlier on we lacked the proper tools to be able to track all packages sent from server to client, but with the new software now in place we have managed to eliminate the problem. A lot of internal QA testing as well as positive feedback from our Beta testers confirm the result.”

Excellent! The open beta period is over, however, and only those who purchased licenses will be allowed into the server. Open beta discount ends on Monday, however, so now is the time to act.

Star Vault has set a date of June 9th for Mortal Online to go gold, and I will be neither the first nor the last to say: FINALLY!

Note: Never write a headline at 1am. Fixed July to June.

Henrik Nystrom Speaks: No Mortal Online This Month

Oh Henrik...

I told you this weekend that Henrik Nystrom would be giving a special announcement on Monday in regards to the status of the game. Yes, it is fifteen minutes to Tuesday, but you can blame my busy schedule for this late news. Long story short, Mortal Online is not being shipped this month, in order to upgrade the issues with networking and desync.

As of now there is no release date for Mortal Online, which means don’t hold your breath for an April release either.

Dear community,

As you know we have been working hard to solve our desync issue within the game to have a proper release of Mortal Online. We have made some progress but we think we have hit the limits on the current version of the network solution we are using. We believed we had the solution before end of March but we now see that this is not possible at the moment therefore we have to postpone the release for another month. We have been working very hard day and night now for some years and finally started to see the goal and release, we just have to put another gear in before we are going to release Mortal Online. Thank you for your feedback and support that helped us to take this important decision.

Both the community and we here at Star Vault agree that we need to have the desync issue solved before we can release Mortal Online. We have decided to upgrade our network solution with Epic Games to improve the overall network structure.

We have already started the merge a week ago which means we are converting all our current features and content into the new structure, this will take some time for us to finish before we can test the result of this with your help in the open beta. We will also fly some of our programmers to the US where Epic Games are located to work within their team to get their fully support on our game and update of the network structure in an efficient way other than distance cooperation. This will improve the speed and quality of us going into the latest build of Unreal Engine and the network solution which should eliminate most of our current issues, both in performance and network wise. While our programmers work directly on the merge and some bug fixing our artists will continue to work on the world, and bring us a few new interest points to Nave. This also means we get the latest build of Unreal Engine which gives us the opportunity to evaluate SpeedTree 5.1 and some other interesting tools.

We will announce a final release date at a later time.

Mortal Online: Big News Monday!

Oh Henrik...

Mortal Online is reaching the final days to make its launch date of September 09 November ’09 December ’09 January ’10 February ’10 March 2010, and depending on who you ask, the game is either ready to go gold, spinning in its grave, dead in its grave, or pre-alpha build (thanks to the random internet trolls specialists who have never regularly see pre-closed beta builds of MMOs.). Either way, Mortal Online is quickly falling into a desperate situation. The longer Star Vault goes without launching the title, the less funding the company receives, and money does not come easily for indie companies of any caliber.

Henrik Nystrom has an announcement to make, and he is making it on Monday, when MMO Fallout will certainly be ready to hear what he has to say. According to a forum post, Mortal Online’s status, update, release, and more will be discussed. What do you think he will talk about? Is there another delay coming or will Star Vault go cold turkey on not making people pay to play, and launch?

I would also like to respond to someone who emailed in asking me to comment on which title will fall first, Alganon or Mortal Online, and my answer is: For shame. This is MMO Fallout, where the question is not “who will fail” but “whose stories will get Omali more hits,” and I am afraid to say that that rank goes to Conan’s breasts and, for some odd reason, people looking to hack Aion accounts (I can see your search terms, people).

More on Mortal Online as it appears…more specifically, this Monday.

Good Luck Mortal Online: Launching This Month

This new decade shall bring great MMO improvements.
The baby Mortal Online was born...

March is upon us, and StarVault has used this opportunity to announce that Mortal Online will be shipping this month to…what? Stop snickering! I’m serious…yes, this month. No, I’m not being ironic. The company has admitted that there are numerous issues that need to be worked out, such as desync problems, among other gripes, but the desync fix should be coming as early as next week.

The announcement is a breath of relief for some and a daunting announcement for others, as there are some who still feel that the game is not launch-ready yet, especially considering the numerous delays over the past six months, it is possible Mortal Online may be launching early to stave off that ailment Gary Whiting knows only too well, bankruptcy. As for what Mortal Online will launch into is another story. A brick wall? A wall of trolls? A fountain of cash? Your guess is as good as mine. MMO Fallout will be here to bring you the coverage.

Not So Much RP In The MMORPG

Yet No One Said Arrrr

There isn’t much more of a vestigial appendage on the server list for your favorite MMO than seeing “RP” as the label. Back when I first started playing World of Warcraft, the role playing servers were populated with a number of hardcore guilds, granted guilds that would quickly try to get you booted off of the server if you didn’t chat using the correct out-of-context code, but hardcore guilds nonetheless. Over time, it became apparent that those guilds were moving out, and players who really had no interest in role playing were coming in, to occasionally add a ‘th to the end of their words, and doth speak’th like yon medieval men, prithee, despite World of Warcraft not being set in Earth’s Middle Ages.

As a hardcore role player sans rear-implanted-stick, I had to come to the sad reality that my kind is scarce, despite half of the MMO name being Role Playing Game, the in-character role playing was something I would have to search wide and far in order to find an active guild that actually actively participated in role playing (rather than “You role play a tank, I’ll role play support, we’ll pretend…that dragon killed your family and we’re gonna take its loot.”). That’s why I’m drawn to sandbox games like Mortal Online. Considering the title is still in beta, there is a lot more to do in the spiritual sense of thinking, rather than physically quantifying. Yesterday I played cleanup, making sure that the loot from dead criminals was safely tucked away in my bank. Today, on the other hand, I actively hunted down miners who had left their keyboards with a macro set up to play for them (Don’t worry, I check for activity before I attack). More often than not, I play a crafter of some sort.

The latest information from Everquest II was just what I needed to remind me that it wasn’t just writing with my left-handed that made me a minority of sorts, with the finding that only 5% of the game’s population are hardcore role players. Among the 40 page report was other information, including that role players play less hours, are slightly younger, and have a higher percentage of female players.

I am the player who uses the biography section of the character creator, even though it has no physical impact on gameplay. I’ve spent quite a bit of time creating a backstory for not just my superhero, but my nemesis in Champions Online, as well as any other MMO I’ve played in recent years. I don’t consider myself better than those who don’t roleplay, and I am certainly not under the understanding that I am enjoying more of the game than they are. In fact, there are several cases I can mention where I end up limiting myself:

In the case of Champions Online, I ended up passing over several powers that, while powerful, did not conceivably fit my character. My hero is a telekinesis power set, so giving him guns or robot minions wouldn’t fit. Equally with Mortal Online, where my end goal is to be a well known armor-crafter, I will have to give up my combat skills to specialize in the various crafting techniques.

Or maybe I’m just being pessimistic. Are there any other role players out there that are in the same boat?

Hello, February!

Expansions, Releases, Shutdowns?

Today is the day we look at January and say “See you next year!” Yes it can only be February, and February can only mean another Everquest expansion is releasing.

February starts off with two titles releasing: Global Agenda and Star Trek Online, on the first and second respectively. An important thing to remember about Global Agenda is that the game does have a single player and multiplayer free component, and that the persistent world AvA is the only portion that requires a subscription. Whether this subscription will maintain or go the way of Cities XL and Crimecraft is yet to be seen.

Star Trek Online, on the other hand, will be seeking the approval of Trekkies and non-Trekkies alike. Considering its place at the top of Steam’s sales list for the past few weeks, if Cryptic can keep the retention rate high, they will have a highly successful title on their hands. As for the myriad of preorder exclusives, we can only hope they will be available at some point on the Cryptic store.

This month also brings us some interesting news from Star Vault and the oft-delayed and much trolled Mortal Online. This month, today in fact, Mortal Online will be going into an open beta phase, where everyone can join! Although relegated to their own open beta server, that may or may not be capped, alongside a 5 euro discount in the box copy, anyone can join in for free and start playing. And by playing, of course, I mean jumping on the forums to textually assault those who paid for beta access by preorder. Mortal Online will stay in open beta until the game goes gold, when it will start charging the monthly fee and you will be required to own the game.

There’s no time for that, Omali, you say! Everquest 2 has a new expansion coming out this month! Sentinel’s Fate brings with it your normal expansion goody bag. New zones, new dungeons, a higher level cap (90), new loot, new weapons and armor, and new quests. Four hundred quests to be exact, and thousands of new items.

As for MMO Fallout, I decided to prune a couple of categories from the Live list due to clutter and inconsistency of updates. The Anarchy Online, Tibia, and Ragnarok Online categories have been deleted. Hopefully the Live category will be that much less cluttered.

Surely this can’t be all that is happening in February, you say. Of course not, but if I told you everything now, what reason would you have to keep coming back until next month? I see your trickery, internet, and I will not fall for it. Not after all of those lost buffs.

What’s Happening, December?

I have no idea what this has to do with December...

Welcome one and welcome all. Although I realize that for half of the world, December 1st has come and gone, I speak for all when I say: Welcome to December! Festive seasonal holiday deals continue this month in an effort to bring you into that festive cheer, just cheerful enough to reach for your wallet (or memory if you have your card number memorized like I do).
