Turbine Reneges On Private Server Plans, Shutting Down Asheron’s Call

Turbine Entertainment has announced that Asheron’s Call and Asheron’s Call 2 will shut down on January 31st, 2017, following the news this week that Dungeons & Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online would be spun off into a separate company with Turbine continuing to focus on the mobile gaming sector. Those of you who have followed the game for the past few years now will no doubt be wondering what happened to those private servers that Turbine announced nearly three years ago?

They aren’t coming. According to a post on the forums, while private servers were planned, the team at Turbine was unable to make the plans a reality.

We had hoped to be able to hand off our servers to the community, so our most loyal players could continue their journey through Dereth. Unfortunately, this is something we were unable to do.

Both games will be free to play until the servers shut down, with new account creation disabled entirely.

Warcraft Legacy Server Survey To Be Presented To Blizzard

draenor

Nostalrius isn’t the first, nor will it be the last World of Warcraft private server to meet the wrath of Blizzard’s legal team, but the shuttering of this service has undoubtedly opened a can of worms that I don’t think many people anticipated. Between a petition receiving over two hundred thousand signatures, a press that finally seems bent on supporting the user call for vanilla servers, and a ridiculous amount of coverage even outside the gaming press, Blizzard has effectively been forced to respond and take the Nostalrius effect seriously.

As it turns out, the Nostalrius team has been invited to Blizzard to become the ambassadors of the vanilla-demanding community. Nothing is being promised, but the team wants you to answer a poll on what kind of server you want. The poll asks some details, whether you are currently playing WoW (legitimately or otherwise), and why you decided to use private servers if you have. It also asks quite a few questions on your favorite eras of WoW, why they were your favorite, etc.

It’s a bit of a time investment, but well worth it. Hopefully we’ll hear more when the Nostalrius team returns from their meeting.

Perfect World Entertainment Is Going Private

dw_capstone_08

Perfect World Entertainment has announced that it is going private. In an announcement posted to investors earlier this week, Perfect World will merge with parent company Perfect Peony Holding Company Limited, a limited liability corporation located in the Cayman Islands and owned by Mr. Michael Yufeng Chi. The acquisition will take place to the tune of $900 million bankrolled by China Merchants Bank and Wing Lung Bank.

Shareholders will be bought out at the tune of $4.04 for ordinary shares, $20.20 for American Depository Shares, and no payment for shares held by the parent company or any of its subsidiaries. The price marks a 28% increase over PWE’s closing price at the date that privatization was originally announced (December 31, 2014).

All of this, of course, is still subject to a majority vote at the next shareholder meeting.
