Alpha Signups Open For Rend, Open World Survival Game

Starting today, players will be able to get their hands on the invite-only alpha test for Rend, an upcoming faction-based fantasy survival game from Frostkeep Studios. Frostkeep is a new independent studio made up of a number of industry veterans from World of Warcraft, Overwatch, League of Legends, and more.

Launching into early access later this year, Rend promises to challenge gaming tropes by introducing factional combat, RPG mechanics, win/loss conditions, and more into a world of survival.

“Our goal at the start of this project was to continuously grow and improve Rend by gathering direct feedback from our players every step of the way,” said Jeremy Wood, co-founder and CEO, Frostkeep Studios. “As we lovingly craft this game with the help of our players, this project remains just as much theirs as it is ours, and this public alpha marks a significant milestone as we offer even more players around the world the opportunity to enter the world of Rend and join our community.”

More details can be found on the official Steam page. Alpha signups can be found on the official website.

The Division: Survivor Expansion Now Testing

huntercoop_1478628022

Why wait for the blizzard to hit New York City when you can play The Division and experience it right now? Ubisoft’s second expansion for The Division is playable now, on the public test server, and will remain up until November 13th.

In this new expansion, players will face extreme conditions after their chopper is taken down by a snowstorm. As Division agents, they have information about a potential cure for the pandemic and they will need to be extracted from the Dark Zone. Finding warm clothes, supplies, food, water and medicine will be vital to their success. However, the environment is not the only danger out there; players must also be aware of 23 other agents and face off against the Hunters, a new mysterious and deadly enemy who is always one step ahead of them.

While the thought of heading into the Dark Zone might scare off some PvE oriented players, Survival will allow for both a PvP and PvE mode. In PvP, you can cooperate with or against other players at your whim, even outside of the dark zone. For PvE, you’ll be playing cooperatively. Those interested can download the PTR client and play through November 13, while everyone else can view the trailer below.

Early Access Fraudsters: Asteroids: Outpost

ss_4288f731964aaf18fc726086e1f154ea1ea4cb31

Generally you’d expect an Early Access Fraudster article to be about an indie developer, but the subject of today’s piece is none of than Atari itself, developed by the applicably named Salty Games, and it goes by the name Asteroids: Outpost. Asteroids is a modern day spinoff of the classic arcade title, a combination of Minecraft and DayZ that challenged players with setting up a base and defending it both from falling asteroids and the attacks of other players. It sounded like a great idea on paper, in practice it wasn’t so great.

Its continued sale is also outright fraud.

If you go on the Steam store page, the game currently holds a mostly negative rating with the top reviews imploring anyone who reads it not to throw down the $29.99 suggested retail price and to avoid the game and company at all costs. Despite the game still being available for purchase, according to Steam reviews the servers haven’t been in operation going back as far as November if not further, and there has been no contact or discussion from the Salty Games team. The official website is dead, all of the social media accounts are empty, and the game is completely unplayable.

In short: The project’s been abandoned, and either no one has bothered to tell Valve, or they just aren’t listening.

Judging by the forums, and the number of people who claim to have flagged the title over the months with no response, the latter seems more likely. Games suddenly shutting down without any notice from the developers isn’t new, as I said before, but this is something you’d expect out of an independent developer and not someone with the backing of a name like Atari. Granted, the Atari that exists today is a shell of the former corporation, one that mostly exists to license its properties out to the few companies that will buy them, but that is neither here nor there.

I tried contacting Salty Games before this article went up, the website is down and unfortunately I can’t find a single way to get in touch with the developers. The Asteroids: Outpost Steam account hasn’t been logged into in over two hundred days, and the group’s Facebook account hasn’t been posted on since last April. Salty Games doesn’t have a company website and Atari still acts like the game is still on sale on their own. If the studio has shut down, it hasn’t been announced and Google is turning up no results.

In addition, I contacted Atari’s press people to try and figure out what was going on and what happened to Salty Games. They haven’t responded. We also contacted Valve who, similarly, did not respond.

At the very least, we can sleep easy knowing that no one seems to actually be buying the game. After all, virtually no one bought it when the servers were live. According to Steam Charts, Asteroids peaked at 42 back in 2015 and hasn’t gone above 2 since. Judging by that success, it seems possible that Salty Games was shut down so fast that no one had time to shut down the Steam store page.

Regardless of their refund policy, Valve still has an obligation to remove this item from the store. It is, in all definitions of the words, abandoned and forgotten by a developer that may not even exist anymore. It died in early access yet continues selling tickets to a show that will never be performed.

Check Out Conan Exiles New Video Teaser

conanexiles_1

Funcom is continuing its work on Conan Exiles, a hardcore survival game set in the Conan universe. It’s up to the player to rebuild the world in their vision, in single player or multi-player on private servers or in public servers. You’ll start with nothing and build up from there, taking on the elements, other players, and dangerous wildlife to form a new kingdom with you as the leader, or go on to bring down someone else’s kingdom.

The latest video promises immersive combat, with players chopping off limbs and armor that visibly breaks as it takes damage.

Funcom’s Next Game Is A Conan Open World Survival Title

conanexiles_1

Funcom has revealed their next title, Conan Exiles, will be released into early access this summer with full launch on PC and consoles to come after. Exiles is set to be an open world survival game where players must survive the harsh lands of Hyboria by hunting, fighting, and taking shelter. The game is played similarly to other survival titles, giving players the option to use public and private servers, alongside a single player mode.

Creative director Joel Bylos points to the setting of Conan as the perfect suitor for a survival game, noting:

“Hyboria is a harsh and unforgiving land where only the strongest can survive while the weak are swiftly cut down. Whether it is hunting animals for food, fighting monsters and other players, or building entire settlements, we want to make sure players feel like they are really fighting to survive and prosper in the most brutal fantasy world ever.”

We learned back in August that Funcom had begun work on multiple smaller, more experimental titles such as The Park. Last month, the company announced that it was a preferred partner of Conan Properties, all but ensuring that there would be more titles coming in the future. More information can be found at the main website.
