Surprise! THQ Nordic Drops Gothic Remake Playable Teaser On Steam

If you thought the season of surprises was over, you’d better toss those dreams into a well and wish for more realistic dreams.

THQ Nordic is doing what few companies in the AAA gaming scene do nowadays; they are asking for player opinion before doing something potentially stupid. Today the company surprised us all and dropped a playable teaser for Gothic on the Steam store, it is free for anyone who owns a game from Piranha Bytes, the folks that made the original Gothic games.

Is Gothic a remake of the 2001 Gothic game? Not really, but it can be. THQ Nordic wants to go back nearly 20 years and pull Gothic into the present. Make it look pretty, shine up what needs to be shined up, and perhaps take another go at aspects of the game that weren’t that good (the combat system). Download the demo, play the game, and leave your thoughts in a survey.

Only you can prevent a bad Gothic remake.

Warhammer 40K: Eternal Crusade is speeding along in development, a process which should be faster thanks to a recent port to the latest Unreal Engine. Eternal Crusade will mark the first game developed by Behaviour Interactive using the engine.

“After evaluating our engine options we decided that Unreal Engine 4 and the team at Epic offered the type of support and the best toolset to make the Warhammer world come to life,” said Rémi Racine, Founder and CEO of Behaviour Interactive. “The sheer amount of productivity tools we get right out of the box have helped the game’s development progress significantly faster, allowing the team to ensure the highest quality at a rate we couldn’t have achieved before.”

More information on Eternal Crusade can be found through the official website.

Molten Games Suffers Massive Layoffs

Molten-Games

Molten Games, the San Diego-based developer founded by ex-Blizzard and Sony Online Entertainment employees, has lost its funding and laid off its staff. The studio was in development of Blunderbuss, a “core” MMORPG built on the Unreal Engine 4 and featuring action combat.

The layoffs were confirmed by the San Diego chapter of the International Game Developer’s Association on the group’s Facebook page.

We’re getting word from contacts at Molten Games that the studio has lost its funding and laid off its employees. They are currently seeking funding to continue development. Let’s be proactive and help our fellow developers land on their feet.

Molten Games was originally funded by NCSoft, who were not able to comment on the matter as an investor with no role in management.

City of Titans Moves to Unreal 4 Engine

slider-big-1

Missing Worlds Media has announced via Kickstarter update that City of Titans is in the process of being transitioned to the Unreal 4 engine. What does this mean? Well development has been put back a little bit, but according to the announcement it will be worth it for an even better game.

The new engine will give us advanced rendering features, physics and visual effects. Physically-based shading will give us more control over the look and feel of characters and objects in your new world. We’ll be able to create wide ranges of surfaces, layer materials, and fine-tune values to make Titan City look more incredible and realistic than we originally planned. An added bonus is our NPCs will be smarter and look better than ever!

Unreal 4 was released at this year’s Game Developer Conference where Epic founder Tim Sweeney revealed that developers could get their hands on the source code for a simple $20 monthly subscription plus 5% of revenue on commercial games.

NCSoft License Unreal 4 For Two New MMOs

ncsoft

No rest for NCSoft. Coming on the heels of Guild Wars 2’s success, and with the recent release of Blade & Soul over in Korea, and the upcoming releases of Wildstar and Lineage Eternal, you might fall under the pretense that the Korean publisher is up to their necks with work. You would be wrong, as NCSoft has inked a partnership with Epic Games to develop two new MMOs under the Unreal 4 Engine.

There are no confirmed titles in the works, and the two games are separate from NCSoft’s existing library. Rumors suggest that one or both may be either the long-delayed and thought to be cancelled Lineage III, and possibly Aion 2. Aion had recently stated a committal to existing IP.

Regardless, we won’t be seeing anything from these games for a long time. According to an NCSoft rep, not until after Lineage Eternal.
