[NM] 100% Completion: Tattletail

Tattletail came out on Steam on December 28 and pretty much flew under the radar until a bunch of Youtubers discovered it and made it somewhat a success (I’m sure it more than paid its development costs and probably put a decent amount of pocket money in the developer’s…pockets). Looking at the Steam stats, it actually still turned out to be a low key title with somewhere between six and twelve thousand owners, which is a disappointment because this game is much more engaging and suspenseful than Five Nights at Freddy’s ever was. Me, personally, I threw my $5 down on launch night.

This is a game with a basic premise: You are a child who opens his Christmas present five days early to find that it is a Tattletail (think creepier Furby) and you have to survive each night until Christmas. Each night progressively introduces you to more mechanics, your Tattletail needs to be brushed, fed, and charged regularly otherwise he will not stop chattering. You have a flashlight which also much be shaken regularly otherwise the room gets dark (obviously), and by sprinting you create noise. The noise mechanic is important because in order to avoid the Mama Tattletail who is out to kill you, you’ll need to keep Tattletail satisfied and your flashlight charged. You actually don’t see any real action until about night 4.

I recommend playing through this game, you’ll get a few hours out of it for a fiver and it isn’t as bad as the screenshots might make you believe. Tattletail has resources that need to be filled, but they go down so slowly that it never becomes obnoxious, and even when he does start screaming about food, the game is basically lenient enough that you can walk from one end of the house to the other and still not have to worry about Mama attacking. The tension in the game comes from the feeling of losing control, as you move around the house, avoiding Mama’s red glowing eyes, while trying to keep your flashlight on and shushing Tattletail. The game punishes you for reflexes, the moment your flashlight goes out your instinct is to hit the mouse button and charge it, causing instant death.

The game isn’t perfect, there are a few instances where you’ll be in Mama’s sights without being able to see her on screen, resulting in an instant death because you thought it was safe to charge your flashlight. There are numerous ways to cheese the game, but you should at least finish the game once before you ruin the experience, spots you can seek out where Mama doesn’t have a spawn point watching over, or when you figure out that your flashlight is only necessary while holding Tattletail (because he’s afraid of the dark) and not charging it doesn’t penalize the player while walking alone in the dark while charging it could potentially kill you.

While I hope that the developer behind this game continues to make games, I hope to never see a Tattletail 2 without at least good reason. What little story is there leaves just enough questions to the player’s imagination, and I’d hate to see sequels for the sake of sequels.

Check it out on Steam.

DC Universe: Buy Your Legendary Set, Get The Rest 50% Off

So you’ve finally hit the maximum level and grinded your read end off to get that fancy legendary gear you need so your character can best even the most deadly of adversaries. Now what? You could start up another character but do you really want to go through that arduous process of grinding gear again? And then what, do it a third time?

Luckily, DC Universe has the right idea. The folks at Daybreak Game Company are taking notice of player’s frustrations with the recent launch of Amazon Fury Part III, noting that while the costs of end game gear are pretty high, and appropriately so given their power, the system isn’t all that nice to those in the community that really want more than one set, or have a bunch of alt characters.

We have created the capability to reduce the cost of vendor gear based on feats you have completed, and we are planning to implement this in our next Game Update with gear from Amazon Fury Part III. Using this system, this essentially means that gear vendor costs will be reduced after the first set of gear has been completed.

Upon completing the set, your character will receive a feat and prices for the vendor will drop by half.

Marvel Heroes Biggest Update Ever Hits Servers Today

The Marvel Heroes “Biggest Update Ever” is finally ready to go live today, as the official forums have posted an announcement for players to expect the servers to go down at noon Pacific with downtime of four hours.

The Marvel Heroes 2016 servers will be going offline at 12 PM PST for the Biggest Update Ever. Downtime is expected to last up to 4 hours.

Marvel’s biggest update ever was announced earlier this year as a part of the game’s yearly major updates. Gazillion is massively changing the way you play the game, from the removal of power points to the replacement of specialization with talents, and the removal of the omega system which is being replaced by a more streamlined infinity system (an alternate advancement system similar to Paragon in Diablo).

The update is sure to be divisive, and MMO Fallout will be covering some of the more major changes with an MMOments coming sometime this week. For details on the update, check out the link below.

[NM] Valve Cuts Off Another Shady Developer Over Fake Reviews

In a world where curation on Steam Greenlight is virtually nonexistent, shady developers seem to be getting more and more prevalent. Introduce Matan Cohen’s Studio, an indie developer consisting of two people (one of whom is probably named Matan Cohen) who released the game Art of Stealth. It wasn’t well received by a lot of people, with the only positive reviews suspiciously coming from accounts that are private and only seem to own one game (Art of Stealth). Before long, accusations of the developer deleting posts, flagging negative Youtube reviews, and flagging negative Steam reviews as “abusive” naturally came to light.

So what is wrong with Art of Stealth? It may be in the reviews of players claiming that there aren’t any actual stealth elements present within the gameplay, or the off-the-shelf Unity store graphics, the developer’s fragile ego, or the suspicious looking positive reviews. It didn’t take long for Valve to step in and swiftly remove the game from Steam outright, posting this announcement via a certified Valve Employee account:

We (Valve) have identified unacceptable behavior involving multiple Steam accounts controlled by the developer of this game, Matan Cohen. The developer appears to have created multiple Steam accounts to post a positive review for their own game. This is a clear violation of our review policy and something we take very seriously.
For these reasons, we are ending our business relationship with Matan Cohen and removing this game from sale. If you have previously purchased this game, it will remain accessible in your Steam library.

Luckily Valve’s forensics team didn’t need to do much work, the developer admitted the reviews were posted by friends.

A few friends of mine who study computer science with me in the university have decided to join Steam in order to support this game by posting positive reviews. My friends love Art of Stealth and they told me that some members from this forum post annoying comments on their reviews, only because they are positive.

The rise of shovelware games on Steam coupled with the lack of curation by Valve has only spurred the growth in watchdog groups constantly searching the shadows for games like the Art of Stealth trying to sneak in unnoticed among the virtual waterfall of games entering the marketplace on a daily basis. If anything, placing bad games on Steam has only become more dangerous as unscrupulous behavior is now more likely to be widely reported and ultimately do more long lasting damage to said developer’s reputation.

The Exiled Hits Steam February 23rd

The Exiled is an upcoming game that promises to merge survival strategy with skill-based PVP combat, and the last time we covered the title was to point out how the developers plan on handling low server population during alpha. The good news is, we’ll be able to see just how well that works as the team at Fairytale Distillery has announced a launch date of February 23 for early access launch on Steam. Early access packages will be available starting at $19.99 and going up to $79.99, containing cosmetic goodies based on which option you choose.

Even better, all players will have access to a 7-day free trial in case you’d actually like to play the game before you throw down real money on it. For more information, check out the FAQ here and the game on Steam.

IPE: Romine V Stanton Lawsuit Dismissed, With Special Caveat

You thought it was over but it wasn’t, or at least it soon will be. James Romine’s lawsuit against Jim Sterling may have hit its final note after a long and rather ridiculous back and forth, with the revelation that the lawsuit has been dismissed. For the course of this lawsuit, you may have been misled to believe that Sterling’s focal point was on the fact that Arizona did not have jurisdiction over the case, and therefore would need to dismiss it. Far be it from me to violate the law by offering legal advice as one without a license. In reality, however, Sterling’s lawyers have focused on whether or not Romine is the proper entity to bring the case.

For instance, a cashier cannot sue a person who damages the store they work at, the store has to do it.

Now the law can look the other way on said rule if the corporate entity can be claimed as an alter ego of the individual. In this case, however, since the two Romine brothers own Digital Homicide, said rule cannot be used, since Romine did not make allegations that the acts of development were carried as an individual rather than as a corporate entity, specifically arguing that the defendant (Sterling) targeted the company itself and claiming damages that were suffered by the company rather than himself as an individual. The court does note that Romine included emotional and financial distress, however.

One issue I’ve been harping on this whole time, to an unnecessary extent, is that James Romine did need, and always will need a lawyer if he’s going to even have a chance of seeing this lawsuit go to trial. You see, while individuals can bring lawsuits pro se (without a lawyer), companies cannot. Digital Homicide would need legal council which nobody is willing to crowdfund, which no lawyer will take without upfront payment, and of which the company cannot afford after destroying their own business by attempting to serve Valve with a subpoena causing their contract to be terminated.

So Romine can’t bring lawsuit against Sterling for damages against DHS’ finances, unless he can prove to the court that he can, but DHS cannot appear in court pro se and needs to be represented through legal council, so the court has granted the defendant’s motion to dismiss, as well as denying Romine’s last two motions to amend as moot. Romine has until February 10, 2017 to file an amended complaint or the case will be dismissed entirely. It is important to note here that said complaint must be filed by a licensed attorney.

At some point the news will just revert to posting articles when ArcheAge goes a full month without having any server issues or lengthy downtime. Until then, we will be here to report on every time players are offered their regular stipend of compensation.

Neverwinter New Changes to Dungeons, 15% VIP Sale

Today’s Neverwinter patch doesn’t just introduce the Gift of Tymora event, it also marks the start of a 15% VIP sale. VIP in Neverwinter acts like a subscription for other MMOs, with bonuses that continue adding with each month that you subscribe adding to a rank that never decreases even if your subscription does.

In other news, today’s update is accompanied by details to changes to in-game content. Foremost, the rewards system is being reworked to give rarer rewards more often, including artifacts, companions, mounts, and more. The game will announce to your group when you obtain some rare piece of loot, with Perfect World also mentioning that the announcement is not global (not to add to the game’s already spammy announcements), and finally the last item on the list is a useful items inventory tab, for things that you need but don’t use all that often like fishing poles, keys, etc. The useful items tab will help clean up your inventory.
