It Is Now Illegal To Make Game Cheats In Korea

ss_2aaccdd248c692cd495899dc88f051ad6f026c84-1920x1080

Making and distributing cheats for games is a great way to get sued, providing you poke big bears like Epic Games or Blizzard, but while developers have taken down cheat makers through injunctions and by playing the copyright laws to their advantage, there isn’t a law on the books that specifically states “thou shalt not make cheats,” and violating a company’s terms of service isn’t a criminal act. Until now, at least, but you knew that from the title of this article.

According to a report circulating from PvPLive, you can now be punished with a maximum of five years in jail or $43 thousand in fines if caught distributing cheats (aimbots, scripts, etc) for video games in violation of the company’s terms of service. Yes, making cheats is now a criminal offense.

The newly altered law raises a lot of interesting questions with regard to the burgeoning (and rather profitable) cheating scene, like how the courts will deal with cheat makers who live outside of the country, or how far reaching a developer can go in having conduct that they don’t approve of punishable by the court system.

How The Exiled Handles Server Activity

environment6

The Exiled is an upcoming game that promises to blend MOBA combat in a sandbox MMO, and the developer has detailed the final alpha test for 2016. Sandbox MMOs, as well as the rest of the genre, pretty much live and die based on server population, so what do you do when the population gets too low? It is nearly 2017, so if you haven’t automated the process, you’re going to be left behind.

In The Exiled, the latest alpha release notes point that servers will shut down if the population reaches a low enough level that players can’t fight off attacks.

Game worlds now require an active player base to defend against daily attacks on the valley. If players on one game world do not manage to donate enough resources to the defense, this world dies and all players on it will migrate as refugees to a different, more active game world.

You can check out more on The Exiled at the official website. MMO Fallout will be covering the game further.

titanfall_2_tech_test_screen_1

Titanfall 2 is a fantastic shooter whose success has been hampered thanks to the poorly timed launch between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. To bring more eyes to the game, Electronic Arts will be releasing a trial for PC and Xbox EA Origin/Access players on November 30th with the trial rolled out to non-subscribers on PC, Xbox, and Playstation on December 2nd.

Featuring the fully remastered fan favorite Angel City map from the original Titanfall, Angel City’s Most Wanted introduces additional free content including the Wingman Elite Pistol, six new Titan kits, and a brand new Pilot execution.

DC Universe Online Focuses on 2017 Updates

581

Daybreak Game Company has released their outward look for 2017 for DC Universe Online, and the content is looking pretty fancy. To end off the year, Daybreak will once again have an open episode period, allowing players to access (virtually) all episodes regardless of membership or content ownership. Next year’s updates will include large content updates:

First, just to doubly reiterate, we are continuing development on large content releases (Episodes), similar to what you are experiencing with Amazon Fury Part III. We know how important new story, new characters, and new primary progression is to everyone’s fun in the game. We are very pleased so far with the new gear system implemented in Episode 27. While we are looking at feedback for minor improvements, the core concepts of the best gear being on the vendor, auto-leveling dropped gear, and so on, remains the plan going forward.

In addition, Daybreak is continuing work on the planned revamp of player stats, item and gear sets, NPC stats, and more. Seasonal events will also be making their way into the game, with the first tasking heroes and villains with taking on the Anti-Monitor, an powerful adversary capable of tearing apart entire universes. You can read the entire list of planned updates at the link below.

Community Is Reviving Everquest Online Adventures

Everquest Online Adventures probably should have been shut down years ago, but Sony Online Entertainment has a habit of refusing to let their games die until the very last minute.

You don’t need to look far to find fans of Sony Online Entertainment’s foray into console gaming, Everquest Online Adventures. The lesser known cousin of the series, EQOA shut down back in 2012 due to dwindling populations and the inevitable decline of the Playstation 2 as a gaming platform. A group is working on an emulator over at Reddit, and they are looking for people to assist in any way possible from technical programming to writing and simple publicity.

SOE, aka Daybreak, has historically been a team player when it comes to classic revivals. The company gave its blessing to the Everquest 1999 server and has so far left alone the teams working on Star Wars Galaxies emulators. Considering the company has zero financial interest in Everquest Online Adventures, it seems highly unlikely that problems should arise out of the emulator’s existence.

Space Truckers Caught Stealing Sprites From Numerous Games

ss_2aaccdd248c692cd495899dc88f051ad6f026c84-1920x1080

Space Truckers is a relatively new game to Steam, having just launched on November 23. If the community has anything to say about it, its life span on the service will be short and possibly end in legal action. Available for the low, low price of $19.99, currently on sale at 10% off, you can enjoy everything that Space Truckers has to offer, like stolen assets from commercial games and community projects.

Users on the ZDoom forum have posted an alarming number of comparisons showing sprites ripped directly from other games. Not content with merely taking assets from William Shatner’s Tekwars, Space Truckers also allegedly steals from Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Strife, Left 4 Dead 2, and more. You can head on over to the forums and see a pretty long list of direct sprite rips, sound files, and even Windows assets that made their way into the game.

As usual, this controversy is drawing more attention thanks to accusations that the developer is actively deleting threads on the game’s Steam forums pointing out these stolen assets. MMO Fallout will follow up with any further information.

Doctor Strange is The Latest Update For Marvel Heroes

dr-s_1

Marvel Heroes tends to excel even among some of the bigger MMOs out there thanks to its tendency to constantly update and upgrade itself. This September we wrote about its biggest system update ever, which effectively constituted a total overhaul of the game. As with other branches of the Marvel entertainment empire, the folks behind Marvel Heroes appear to be fully aware that by recycling and/or revamping content based on the same basic heroes and settings they can continue keep their fans interested.

The game also has something of a built-in advantage in that it’s still the largest and most sophisticated ensemble video game to have come out since the dawn of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gamers are interested in seeing crowds of Marvel characters in the same place, and there are only a few ways to do so across a huge spectrum of gaming. One of the first opportunities in this regard is a game some may not even know about! Casino Source lists a plethora of games and features offered by several online gaming sites, and includes mention of an Avengers slot machine. Further research shows this is a clever little arcade, and one of many to utilize a Marvel license to make slot reels more interesting. It’s entirely film-based, featuring all the main characters from the 2012 movie and giving gamers a nice chance to enjoy them all in one place.

That’s one of the smaller examples. And between that and Marvel Heroes, there are a few mobile apps with large casts of characters, as well as the LEGO-based video games where plenty of Marvel heroes and villains are present. But even among these titles nothing comes close to the amount of characters offered in Marvel Heroes. This is what keeps it out in front as probably the best Marvel video game you can find these days—and what separates it from other strong MMO options with less recognizable content.

And part of maintaining this reputation and status as the primary game for exploring lots of beloved comic characters is keeping those characters updated and interesting. For instance, if the creators of Marvel Heroes had simply plopped Iron Man into the MMO years ago and never touched him again, he’d have gotten old for players by now, even as one of the most important characters. Instead, the Marvel Heroes team regularly changes not only the game itself but the characters within it by providing new costumes, new abilities, and more.

They’ve recently done it again with a new update celebrating the release of Doctor Strange in theaters. Entertainment Weekly explained the update in detail, discussing new costume options for Strange (including his outfits from the film as well as a special comic book costume for those who logged in at a particular time). But this time, Marvel Heroes went a step beyond the ordinary image update and also built in some new gameplay options in the spirit of the film. For instance, the character of Mordo is now available as a team-up ally, not just for players controlling Strange but for any of the 59 playable characters in the game.

All in all it’s a pretty exciting update given how beloved the Doctor Strange movie already seems to be among fans. But it’s also just the latest example of what has helped to keep Marvel Heroes out in front of the competition for the best Marvel video game on the market.
