Destiny Won't Allow Trading

During their latest Q&A session, Bungie answered one player’s question on whether or not trading would be allowed in Destiny. Short answer? No. Bungie wants you to earn your weapons.

As for swapping irons in the Tower? Nope. We want you to earn ‘em. You should be able to tell a badass story for every sweet jewel in your arsenal. Once you earn them, the various Guardians under your account will be able to trade them, but weapons belong to the players who acquire them through action and bravery.

As an MMO and a loot-driven game, the ability to trade items to other players is a feature that many players are likely to expect Destiny to include. Still, Destiny hasn’t launched yet and this decision may not be permanent.

Trion Controls ArcheAge Prices

archeage

Anytime you have separation point between a publisher and a developer, the question is inevitably raised as to just how much control the publisher has in the relationship. We have seen publishers take over development of a game from its developers all the way down to publishers only capable of forwarding bug reports to the developers for them to fix. The ultimate answer we seek in judging where the scale tips is so we know who to blame when the things hit the fan and players want to know who is responsible for mucking things up.

In the case of ArcheAge, at least we know that Trion is in full control of the cash shop. As Community Manager Scapes posted, Trion controls the content and the pricing.

“We decide what’s in it and at what price, simple as that.”

Elder Scrolls Online Ask Me Anything

Elder-Scrolls-Online-Argonians

Zenimax has a fresh batch of questions and answers regarding the Elder Scrolls Online, and the topics range from skills and campaigns and everything in between. While campaigns between the factions last for three months at a time, nothing is reset at the end of a campaign except for the leaderboards and score. Keeps, scroll ownership, emperor status, and location do not. The most interesting answer from the Q&A was that Zenimax dodged the question on whether or not a player who is infected and becomes a werewolf or a vampire will be able to transform back. Our guess is yes, but Zenimax is being coy.

No word on how this affects player-operated gentleman clubs.

Raph Koster's MMORPG.com Q&A

ultima-online-asia-maybe-580

Raph Koster performed a live forum Q&A on the MMORPG.com forums, answering questions about his views on the industry present and future, and boy were the questions interesting. When asked about an MMO mimicking pre-Trammel Ultima Online, Koster stated his disbelief that a modern Ultima Online could work, and that the “whole gankfest thing” is a relic of the past that simply doesn’t work anymore.

To me the essence of sandboxiness that was in UO and SWG is not about the PKing. It is about a simulated world, a functioning economy, a low power difference between high and low level players, and a system that doesn’t push you into combat as the only way to play the game (or even classes).

Koster also states his belief that MMOs haven’t moved much since the days of Metaplace, aside from the ever increasing budgets. He believes that while Grand Theft Auto hasn’t influenced the genre since GTA 3, Minecraft has proven far more influential. There is a lot more to read, and you can find the entire Q&A at the link below.

Ultima Online Ask & Answer #6

Ultima Online has published the sixth Ask & Answer and there are some interesting questions for gamers, regardless of whether you play Ultima Online or not. For instance, did you know Ultima Online doesn’t have a full personal message system in place? The team is working on one, according to the Q&A. In addition to upgrading the game’s personal message system, there are plans in the works to add in new tools to help players find vendors in crowded cities. Unfortunately, once again the question of will there be a classic shard is a sound no.

There are a few more questions in the Q&A. Ultima Online recently celebrated its fifteenth year of service with the introduction of the new ruler of Britannia: Lord Blackthorn.

The Future of RuneScape: Jagex Talks RuneScape 3

In a recently released live Q&A, Jagex talks about RuneScape 3, the next iteration in the RuneScape development line. Noting that the Evolution of Combat update coming later this year is not the same as RuneScape 3. Instead, Jagex views a set of benchmarks as what would constitute RuneScape 3, being an overhaul in the overall experience. Over the next couple of years, the aim is to improve the experience in audio, graphics, the interface and world map, among other features. With the introduction of HTML5 support, coming soon, is that the game will look and sound better, as well as run smoother than the current Java platform.

Unlike when Jagex introduced RuneScape 2, and allowed players to continue playing RuneScape Classic, RuneScape 3 will not leave behind RuneScape 2 servers. The reason is that RuneScape Classic to RuneScape 2 was such a massive update to the game that Jagex could not seamlessly bring players over, where as RuneScape 3 is seen as a natural progression of the game. There are no plans to release classic versions of RuneScape 2 servers. Additionally, Jagex is actively working on getting RuneScape working on additional devices, aiming at possibly next year.

A lot of what Jagex talks about is still rather cryptic. Among the features teased are the ability to gather items during normal game play to offer up to a player’s chosen god. The details are scarce but it seems to imply that some form of factional system is coming to RuneScape, allowing players to choose which gods they want to support. Another goal is to make player vs player combat more enticing, especially to players who normally would not bother with the activity. Additionally, there are two skills as well as player owned shipping ports coming next year.

There is plenty more to find out in the video, which is well over an hour long.

John Smedley On: PlaneSide 2

John Smedley dropped by Reddit for an “Ask Me Anything,” and the community certainly did ask him anything. Naturally, the Q&A started with Smedley being asked, once again, to apologize for Star Wars Galaxies, which he did. For the sake of time, I’ve compiled a few of his more interesting answers.

In regards to Planetside 2’s premium subscription:

“subscription will NOT remotely be something you need to have. just something nice to have.”

When asked about an Everquest Classic (non-progression) server:

“if that’s what EQ fans wanted we would”

On Everquest Next:

“we plan to make EQ Next great by going places MMOS have never gone. I know that’s vague but it’s coming”

On advertising DUST 514:

“I’m sure helping get the word out. It is a great game. CCP is awesome.”

On balance in Planetside 2:

“At it’s heart, PS2 is similar to PS1. play it and let me know what you think.”

On hand-holding in MMOs:

“I despise the hand holding shit. hate it in a big way.”

On Vanguard:

“It’s going F2P next week with many members of the original team on it! It’s getting a lot of love.”

On streaming Planetside 2:

“We might even be working on a secret twitch.tv and youtube streaming thing I can’t talk about that might or might not be going in as I’m writing this.”
