Jagex Reports Double Digit Growth In 2016

Things are looking up for Jagex, as the UK developer announced that revenues hit double digit growth for the second year. In a press release sent out today, Jagex unveiled their 2016 annual revenues, announcing a 28% increase to £74.4 million. Growth was driven due to the release of NXT, a new game client for RuneScape 3, while Old School RuneScape similarly saw major growth partially due to the eSports aspect of the annual Deadman tournament.

Acting CEO Phil Mansell had the following to say:

“2016 saw RuneScape celebrate its 15th anniversary and we placed a razor focus on evolving and growing both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. Through investment in big ticket content, technology, marketing and strengthening the relationship we enjoy with millions of players that form our deeply-engaged community, the team delivered landmark performance by growing active users, conversion rates and subscribers.”

Get Lucky in RuneScape: Jagex Overhauls Luck Mechanic

Call it what you want, luck is a big factor in MMORPG’s. You can pray to RNGesus all you want, but at the end of the day you’re still beholden to that invisible spinning wheel landing on the items you need to make the big bucks. It’s the difference between going home a billionaire and heading home in a digital body bag. With today’s update to RuneScape, Jagex is retooling how your character’s luck is determined.

Luck-enhancing items now fall on one of four tiers. Tiers 1-3 affect content specific to certain level ranges. Tier 4 affects content of all levels, along with some extra benefits of its own.

Your luck rises with one of four rings, as well as through various other items. To check out the entire list of changes, click on the link below for this week’s patch notes.

Snapshots: RuneScape Agents of Fury

Today’s Snapshots comes from RuneScape where players are once again playing a limited time resource gathering event. For the next two weeks, skilling activities will yield Zamorakian Emblems, which can be traded in to the envoys of Avernic general Nymora in return for rewards including pieces of the Furies Agent outfit. You can see the full outfit constructed above. The full outfit requires ten days worth of resources, so get cracking!

How RuneScape Is Slowly Rolling Back Treasure Hunter

Treasure Hunter is one of the more divisive aspects of present day RuneScape 3, it serves as both an interesting feature of the game as well as a perfect example of how disgustingly greedy Jagex can be when they feel like being disgusting and greedy. Case in point, the elite skill equipment. Rolled out over the past couple of years, the elite skill outfits not only offered substantial bonuses to players who collected the four-piece outfits, they were mostly available for a very limited time. We’re talking three days to collect three sets of four piece suits tied to random lockboxes.

Players were understandably angry, since the promotions were rather blatant attempts at fishing in whales as the event would require substantial sums of money over a short period of time in order to potentially never gain all twelve pieces. As part of an initiative launched last October to balance revenue with long term game health, Jagex still plans on releasing said skilling outfits via Treasure Hunter. After a period of exclusivity they will be obtainable in-game as a high level reward.

Once you meet the 70 Mining or Runecrafting requirement, you’ll be able to collect fragments of the rune ethereal and gemstone golem outfits while training the corresponding skill through any regular method. Success chance increases with your skill level, and fragments will be automatically stored in your currency pouch.

In addition, many of the skilling outfits have been made fully available on Treasure Hunter itself, so there is still the chance of obtaining them through daily key stipends while you’re grinding out the materials. The good news is that Jagex seems to be placing less emphasis on making game-altering equipment exclusive to Treasure Hunter, which is sure to be a relief to players tired of being asked to pull out their wallets every few weeks.

Snapshots: RuneScape Healing The Scar

Today’s snapshot comes to us from RuneScape. Today’s update to the ever-expanding MMO finally healed the scar in Lumbridge, where players assisted in a battle between gods Saradomin and Zamorak going on four years ago. Since then the battle-scarred land has been used for everything from holiday events to summer beach parties. With today’s update, a bit of life returns to the region with all sorts of rabbits and imps walking around.

Also part of today’s update is a major overhaul to the game’s wardrobe system.

Old School RuneScape: Win A Real Dragon Scimitar

Perhaps you’ve played RuneScape and fantasized about what you could do with a real dragon scimitar, be it opening letters, showing off your bottle opening skills, or just convincing your neighbor to stop stealing your morning paper. Well you now have that chance, provided your skills in combat are already up to the test. Old School RuneScape is holding a competition to win a real life (replica) dragon scimitar, and it will be handed out along with a free year of membership to whoever has the fastest fight cave time before midnight on Wednesday, March 8th.

You’ll need your wits about you, as well as a healthy amount of potions, food and gear.

Old School RuneScape Celebrates Four Year Anniversary

It’s been four years since Jagex unveiled Old School RuneScape, the retro spinoff of the popular MMORPG that brought gamers back to the days of 2007, complete with graphics, combat system, and all. Since then, the game has seen countless updates, all dictated and voted on by a majority of the community. The mode itself has spun off into the hardcore Deadman Mode which plowed head first into the eSports scene with successful tournaments, rewarding thousands of dollars in real cash to its winners.

“This year is a double anniversary for Old School RuneScape; not only does the game celebrate its fourth birthday, but it’s also the 10th anniversary of the ‘snapshot’ server we used to bring Old School to life,” said Mathew Kemp, producer, Old School RuneScape. “Old School’s growing player base and its impact in the competitive sector is an impressive testament to the remarkable appeal of the game and shows it’s come a long way in the last decade. But however far Old School has come, it’ll always be rooted in 2007 for us.”

To celebrate, Jagex is rolling out presents in the form of new servers and a birthday bash with exclusive items. Other updates rolled out with the festivities include 12 new servers and several quality of life improvements (see link below).

Reminder: RuneScape Double Experience Weekend Coming

Mark your calendars, cancel your weekend appointments, and tell that significant other that you need some alone time, because it’s that time again. No, not half price appetizers, you can get that just about every Wednesday. I’m talking about double experience in RuneScape.

But this year it’s not just about getting you in on the weekend and telling everyone else to go shove off. The actual event runs from Friday February 17th through Monday February 20th. Afterward, you’ll still be able to get your hands on some extra experience over the course of the week, with the bonus decreasing every fifty thousand experience.
