NCSoft has released a brand new Welcome to Wildstar video. The video doesn’t reveal anything new, but it does introduce the basics of the game to prospective gamers. The narrator seems to have had a fun time recording it.

Cash Shop Trading Coming To Riders of Icarus

Riders of Icarus

Pop quiz: Name one way in which developers have successfully decreased gold farming while raising revenue. If you guessed tradeable cash shop items, you are correct. Riders of Icarus is the latest title to jump on board the trading bandwagon with the announcement that a new section of the shop will allow players to buy tradeable goods that can be bought and sold on the auction house.

NX Plus is a new section of Ellora’s Shop that’s coming in the next update. Riders can buy items within the NX Plus tab with NX Prepaid and those items are tradable or can be sold on the Auction House!  This new feature will allow more Riders access to more items from Ellora’s Shop. Riders who have gold but lack NX can buy these items as they’re placed on the open market, allowing those Riders access to items previously unavailable to them. Only the items purchased directly from the NX Plus tab can be traded and only when the items are not used or otherwise bound to a Rider.

What’s the catch? Unlike in other titles, the items available on the NX Plus portion of the cash shop won’t be static, they rotate in and out every so often making some items only available for a short period of time. You’ll have to catch the items you want as they are available.

Daybreak Game Company Might Have A New Game Coming

gamecards_usa

Daybreak Game Company appears to be working on a new title, a large scale FPS that might be named Mythwarden. According to a number of sleuths folks on Reddit, Daybreak has opened a position for Senior Game Designer, specifically to implement core systems into a large scale FPS game. Other eyes have noticed that Daybreak has registered the domain for Mythwarden. Whether the two are related will have to be seen, for now all we can do is speculation.

And play Battlefield 1. That is also an option.

Darkfall: Rise of Agon Offers Free Game Time

night_in_yssam

Darkfall: Unholy Wars is still dead, however while Aventurine was forced to shut down, but two companies have licensed the game and are looking to create their own reimagining of the original (and some would argue better) original Darkfall release. Rise of Agon is one of those two titles, and the folks at Big Picture Games released the latest set of patch notes today dealing with all manner of various tweaks.

For those still on the fence, you will be able to access the game for free beginning October 14th and continuing to October 24th.

On Friday, October 14th after server maintenance until the server maintenance of Monday, October 24th, Darkfall: Rise of Agon will be free to play for everyone. New players who wish to try Darkfall for the first time or players interested in trying out some of the new changes will be able to do so during this free period. We would like to call on our veterans to provide assistance and take in new players who try the game and help show them what the game has to offer. We plan to host events during this time and hope to see both new and old faces out on the battlefield! Stay tuned for more information later this week.

Daybreak Game Company Promises Support For H1Z1: Just Survive

2015-01-16_00025

Ever since Daybreak Game Company split H1Z1 into its two parts, players of the environmentally focused Just Survive have grown pretty frustrated over a perceived lack of support. It wouldn’t surprise many to hear that King of the Kill has been receiving the bulk of DGC’s attention, especially when you consider that the game draws in about ten times the average traffic on Steam. H1Z1’s new General Manager Landon Montgomery has taken to Reddit to let players know that their voices are being heard, and the Just Survive team is working on improvements.

During the short time I have been here, I’ve been able to assess the Just Survive history both internally and externally. And, while I recognize that the past year has been a little frustrating for the loyal crowd, I know that the internal team is excited to push forward and do right by you, the players. It’s one of the reasons I’m here and why we’re actively building up the Just Survive team. We’ve added several key roles and we are excited to introduce these additional team members in the coming weeks.

We wish Landon Montgomery the best of luck in his new position. He’s going to need it.

Neverwinter Details Fishing/Sailing In Coming Update

1f40293e1c2ce58dfd52b7a425d573541475861056

With Neverwinter’s next big update on the way, the team at Perfect World Entertainment has released a new developer blog detailing a couple of the new systems. With the Sea of Moving Ice update, players will gain access to their own khyeks, a personal boat that will allow them to navigate the open waters. In addition to providing safe voyage and preventing you from becoming the next Jack Dawson, khyeks also open access to a new form of fishing.

In fishing, you’ll be able to set your own bait, cast your line, set your hook, and reel in some big catches. The list of fish to add to your collection is pretty big (see above), but there’s more than just snagging sea life. Adventurers will also be able to find treasure maps tucked away in bottles, leading to all sorts of loot including high tier fishing rods and khyeks.

Daybreak Continues Shrinking: Cutting Cash Cards

gamecards_usa

The continued shrinking of Daybreak Game Company, formerly Sony Online Entertainment, continues today with the announcement that the company’s cash cards will no longer be sold in stores this year. According to the post, there are no plans to bring back said cash cards in the foreseeable future.

The details of the plan are a little confusing. The notice was posted today (10/4) noting that retailers should have begun removing them as of September 26th. After November 8th, the cards will no longer activate and thus cannot be purchased even if a retailer leaves them on the shelf (because they need to be activated), but the website also says that as long as a card was purchased “before October 7,” it will still be redeemable.

The option to convert Daybreak Cash into H1Z1 currency will be available until December 31st.

Daybreak’s takeover of Sony Online Entertainment in February 2015 led to deep cuts, including major layoffs and the cancellation of Everquest Next. While not a guarantee, the fact that Daybreak is cutting its physical stock could mean the company is still facing financial woes.

Beta Perspective: Criticism of the Avatar

shroud-of-the-avatar-2016-10-03-18-42-02-11

Shroud of the Avatar starts you out as the corporeal form of the Avatar, an individual who has been summoned to Brittania time and time again to save the world from impending destruction. You meet with Lady British, who tells you that even her husband has returned to deal with evil forces threatening the land.

Lord British is here too? Great, I can’t wait to see how the guy completely ignores me and leaves me with absolutely none of his nation’s wealth to tackle the problem that he’s let fester for the last however many years. The dude’s been a total waste of space for most of the Ultima series, and didn’t even bother showing up for the embarrassing display that was Ultima Forever, although Garriott was long gone by the time that embarrassment of a game was released.

After building your character and answering the Oracle’s questions, you go through the Moon Gate and immediately find yourself in a village that was just ravaged by elves. You come across a dying knight who asks you to take an amulet to Brigid in Resolute. Along the way, you pick up items and figure out how to wield a sword and strike a test dummy.

shroud-of-the-avatar-2016-10-02-23-02-21-64

If there’s one thing I constantly hope that the gaming industry would take away from Richard Garriot’s games, it is to show even a modicum of the respect that Garriot has for role playing and building worlds. I’m talking about putting in more effort than just designing an enemy and plonking him down on a field and calling it a day.

There are numerous areas just in the tutorial zone that you are likely to completely miss out on if you try to power your way through it. For instance, did you know that it is possible to find a healer who tries to cure the wounded soldier? It is, but unless you bypass the gate and head down another path, then talk to the guy and get on the subject of the dead and dying, you’d never know. He can’t save the soldier, but the game appreciates you taking the effort and rewards you as such.

It’s the little things that make the game that much more real feeling. You don’t know anyone’s name until you ask them or they tell you, and generally they won’t right away. Sure, you can weasel your way around the system by clicking on buzzwords or grunting your comments like a caveman, but if you want to dive into the world and type “what is your name?” you can. You won’t learn everything by following the underlined words, so you eventually have to play along if you want things like quests.

Now let’s talk about difficulty.

shroud-of-the-avatar-2016-10-02-23-30-58-04

Are you kidding me? I’m not even out of the tutorial zone and already I’m getting my ass handed to me because the game decided it was high time to throw me into a three on one cluster f-you know, I’m not going to let this discourage me. This wouldn’t be an Ultima game if it didn’t start you out completely ill-equipped for the most basic task at hand. I need to get back into the mentality of RPGs where you need to git gud or get out, and having the game eat your lunch and then stab you in the face with your own fork is exactly the message the game needs to send to players that they aren’t screwing around.

Is it frustrating? Absolutely, but it makes the reward all the sweeter when you’re forced to put in work towards it. That said, nothing will make you smash your keyboard quite like that feeling when you see your attack miss, then miss, then miss, miss again, miss a fifth time, miss, miss, miss, and finally hit two damage only to miss, miss, miss, miss, you get the picture.

But push come to shove, Shroud of the Avatar overshoots Difficult Lane and lands right in the middle of BS Valley. In short: enemies are too densely packed and take too long to kill in respect to how fast they respawn. And to top it off, enemies just seem to waltz in from random areas of the map. You’ll be fighting two archers only to have a wolf and two random other bandits just rush in and start attacking you. So you start taking them out but by the time you finish the guys you killed earlier have respawned and joined the fight again. It’s a never ending cycle in some spots!

Experience in Shroud of the Avatar comes from a pool system. By killing enemies and completing quests you add to the experience pool that then goes toward leveling up skills as you use them. So yes, you do have to quest in Shroud of the Avatar in order to level up. The higher level the skill, the more it will draw from the pool in order to level up. In order to level up efficiently, you’re going to have to put locks on skills and decide where your priorities lie.

So it might come as a bit of surprise when I sum this up by saying that I love this game and my enjoyment is getting higher as I play. The more you fight, the better you get, the higher your stats, and the more punishment you can take out and withstand. Considering how much time I’ve invested into just the first area, I feel like this is going to be a very, very long game.
