Lizard Squad Member Convicted, Gets No Jail Sentence

KivimakiConvicted-610

Finland has successfully convicted Julius Kivimaki of over fifty thousand counts of cyber crime for his role in the attacks on Sony and Microsoft’s networks along with other members of the hacker group Lizard Squad. With fifty thousand counts under his belt, you might be wondering if Kivimaki will be going to prison for the next three hundred years. He won’t be. In fact, he won’t be going to prison at all.

Considering the weight and damage of Kivimaki’s actions, the seventeen year old is being handed the equivalent of a two-year suspended sentence, meaning he won’t be spending any time behind bars unless he manages to violate the conditions of his parole. As part of the sentence, Kivimaki’s online activities will be heavily monitored.

Finland’s judicial system has been under heavy criticism for years over its perceived lenient treatment of white collar criminals. In December last year, a Helsinki court handed out three five-month suspended sentences and one sixteen month suspended sentence to a group charged with collecting money to fund terrorist group Al-Shabaab in Somalia.

Derek Smart Slams Star Citizen

wc_asteroid_ambush000257

Derek Smart is an industry veteran whose work and legacy goes back two decades, with the Universal Combat and Battlecruiser line of games, and he has bad news for those eagerly awaiting Star Citizen: It’s probably going to be a total disaster. Once you get past Smart reiterating his curriculum vitae, he gets to the meat of the article:

Without disrespect to anyone, I’m just going to say it: it is my opinion that, this game, as has been pitched, will never get made. Ever.

Smart does not believe that any company capable of building the game that Roberts has pitched, especially not for less than $150 million. When the game eventually does go belly up, as the blog post states, the same media that have been reporting on the game’s funding stretch goals will be the first to vilify the developer.

The hype surrounding this project since its 2012 inception is going to guarantee that every media outlet is going to want a piece of the action, and most of that is going to be based on sheer speculation, wanton conjecture, bullshit anonymous “sources” etc., because the focus would be on vilifying Chris and crew, rather than focusing on what mistakes were made.

Star Citizen first popped up on Kickstarter back in 2012 when other industry veteran Chris Roberts asked for a mere half a million to get his game off the ground and to make it look enticing to private investors. The space sim community responded by throwing a sack load of money in Roberts’ direction, $2.1 million in the Kickstarter campaign alone. Even so, with the Kickstarter campaign over and done with, the momentum of the cash flow didn’t stop. It sped up, to the tune of $84 million.

Since then, the game has become synonymous with big money, and you can say what you want about the morality of selling $2,500 singular digital ships for a game that doesn’t exist, people are still lining up to give Roberts money hand over fist. As the cash pile increased, so did the scope of the game, to the point where the the original pitch is just a blip on the current design plan.

And the more that Star Citizen has seen its vision broadened, the further behind the game gets, and the more money it seems to bring in, and the more agitated that early backers seem to be getting. After three years of development, backers have been graced with a hanger and an incomplete Arena Commander mode where players can battle with some of their ships.

You can read the entire thing at the link below, but be warned: It is a long read.

Old School Deadman Introduces Survival PvP

scapesold

Jagex has unveiled the latest game mode for Old School RuneScape, dubbed Deadman. In Deadman mode, the entire world is open pvp except for certain safe zones. By killing other players in the world, you are given the opportunity to raid their bank for one inventory (28 slots) worth of items. On the other hand, if you are killed that means the possibility of losing your best stuff in addition to that which you have banked. Dying also means losing half of your experience.

The good news is that Deadman will also carry a 5x experience boost, as well as the ability to protect up to five skills and pay to insure items.

Deadman mode will have its own hiscores so you can see how good you are, don’t forget though, you can go down the hiscores as well as up them. You will also be able to track the total amount of times you have been killed, how many people you have killed and the highest score you have reached.

There is no set release date for Deadman mode, however Jagex assures that it will not come out until the issue with denial of service attacks is fixed.

Square Enix Apologizes For FFXIV On Mac, Offers Refunds

ffxiv_pub_pach2.4_08

Direct Naoki Yoshida has posted a letter to Final Fantasy XIV fans, apologizing for issues with the mac client. The mac version of FFXIV launched on June 23rd, and it became immediately apparent that the game was not running properly on many systems, even those who met the minimum requirements. According to Yoshida, in the chaos before the launch, the wrong system requirements were posted, leading to players purchasing the game who would be unable to play it.

I believe that the biggest problem with the Mac version release was the significant discrepancy between the performance of the product our development team produced and the expectations our customers had for it, which was due to the lack of information available on our product when sales commenced, as well as other issues. I would like to explain in detail how this happened.

For players who purchased FFXIV and cannot play it, Square is offering refunds. This includes refunds for those of you who purchased game time cards. You can find the rather lengthy explanation at the link below.

Default Subreddits Going Dark, Protesting Administration

subreddit

Reddit users are revolting, again, in what seems to be a never ending string of controversy around the community-driven website. The latest smoking gun, the removal of a popular Reddit employee. Victoria Taylor is a name many of you have come into contact with, especially if you’ve attended any of Reddit’s celebrity Ask Me Anything events. Taylor was the Director of Talent at Reddit, managing celebrity AMA’s and ensuring the events ran smoothly.

At least she did, until the /r/IAmA subreddit was taken private with the notice that Taylor had been let go from her position with no notice. In response to the sudden change, numerous subreddits have gone dark, including those listed by default on the Reddit homepage. /r/gaming joins the ranks of other default subreddits going dark in protest, including /r/videos, /r/askreddit, /r/movies, /r/science, /r/books, /r/history, /r/art, /r/gadgets, and of course the first group, /r/IAMA.

The messages on each subreddit is virtually the same:

Due to an unexpected Reddit administrative personnel change /r/gaming joins a group of default subreddits going dark temporarily in an effort to resolve the situation. Our apologies for any disruption this may cause.

The list of subreddits continues to grow, with subscriber bases ranging from a few hundred to several million. How long they plan to stay offline is another topic for another day.

[Less Massive] Anti-Gamer Senator Leland Yee Off To Prison

leland_yee.0

Former California State Senator Leland Yee this week pleaded guilty to charges of racketeering in the San Francisco federal court. Yee admitted to accepting bribes in return for favors, including ten thousand in return for assisting in obtaining a state grant, eleven grand to meet with another state senator to discuss legislation, extorting money in return for favorable votes, and conspiring to purchase weapons from the Philippines and sell them illegally in the United States.

“Senator Yee’s admission of guilt today brings some measure of justice to the true victims of his crimes: the people of the state of California,” said David J. Johnson, FBI Special Agent in Charge of the San Francisco Field Office.

Yee become an antagonist of the gaming industry ten years ago when he authored the 2005 bill to ban the sale of ultra-violent video games in California, a bill which was struck down by the Supreme Court. After the Sandy Hook massacre, Yee took further shots at the gaming community and industry at large.

“Gamers have got to just quiet down,” Yee, D-San Francisco, said in an interview Tuesday. “Gamers have no credibility in this argument. This is all about their lust for violence and the industry’s lust for money. This is a billion-dollar industry. This is about their self-interest.”

Incidentally, Leland Yee is a strong supporter of gun control, presumably including the ones he planned to sell after smuggling them illegally from the Philippines.
