Shadow Arena Is Officially Dead

Game to sunset this year.

Update: Pearl Abyss provided the following statement to MMO Fallout regarding the closure:

Unfortunately, after long deliberation, we have decided to stop the journey of Shadow Arena. First introduced as an action battle content in Black Desert, Shadow Arena was an opportunity to provide our users with a new gameplay experience. With the experience gained through Shadow Arena, we will focus on better game service and development in the future.

Original story: Shadow Arena is dead, long live Shadow Arena. In a move that should hardly shock the ten people who still play the game, Shadow Arena is terminating its service and shutting down later this year. Specifically, the service will end on August 10. That’s a Wednesday for those of you marking your paper calendars.

Despite our efforts to introduce various elements to the game, we thought that Shadow Arena in its current state was inadequate in offering a unique experience. With deep consideration, we regret to inform you that the service of Shadow Arena will be terminated.
We would like sincerely thank all the players who have been in support of Shadow Arena as we deliver this news.

As of today, July 8, the ability to download the game even through its own client will have been turned off, as are G-Coin purchases. Any players who made purchases between July 8, 2021 and today’s closure announcement will be eligible for a refund either through Steam or through customer service depending on where you bought them. You’ll need to contact Steam customer support or Pearl Abyss customer support to obtain your refund. You have until August 10 to request a refund after which all Gcoin expires.

Also as compensation, Pearl Abyss is emailing out coupons for players to use in Black Desert Online and Black Desert Mobile. Those will be sent to the email used on signing up. More details available on the Steam news page.

Originally conceived as content for Black Desert Online, Shadow Arena was spun off into its own title. The game has had a tumultuous few years, including the abandonment of its concept as a battle royale and focusing on becoming a 3v3 fighter. It spent most of the last year under 50 concurrent Steam users.
