Old School RuneScape Available To All

noedits

As an early Christmas present to their players, Jagex has reopened the Old School RuneScape servers to all, regardless of their membership status. Free players can access the nonmember worlds until the event ends on December 31st.

Obviously, this will raise the question of the long term plans for F2P – the next few weeks of open access will help us see what happens when everyone can access the game in a free mode, and allow us to decide whether a permanent and full F2P option is viable for the future. We are still very much dedicated to ensuring that any F2P options can work for both Jagex, the game and the community. We’ll let you know how it went in the new year.

To fight against bots, free players will be unable to fish lobsters.

Xsyon Terrain Update

xsyon_sandbox_mmorpg_20140625_1

Xsyon has released a massive update to the game’s terrain system. The goal of the update is to provide plenty of room to settle for new players, while facilitating travel for current players and allow them room to expand.

The Xsyon landscape is shaped and molded by players. Over the years many unsightly mounds and ruins of abandoned sites have built up across the land. The terrain reversion update gradually restores this neglected land to its original state. Felled tree stumps and logs that have littered the landscape also decay over time.

You can check out Xsyon for free at the official website.

KingsIsle Reducing Free To Play Accessibility In Pirate101

stitching

If the title has you scratching your head, you aren’t alone. Generally whenever we hear about an MMO changing the manner in which its free players enjoy the game, it is to open up more content or to allow accessibility into more features. Very rarely do we see the pay wall be pushed backward rather than forward. That being said, KingsIsle Entertainment has published the most recent patch notes to the test server, which will reduce the amount of content players can access before they are asked to fork over.

New players will encounter Premium Areas earlier than previously. However, both of the following new Premium Areas will be given to all accounts that have existing characters created before these updates are released to the live game:

  • Prologue: Part 1—the first Premium Area will be encountered during the Quest “A Good Ship?” after talking to Dockmaster Dan.

  • Prologue: Part 2—the second Premium Area will be encountered during the Quest “To Jonah Town” just before players dock to Jonah Town.

You can find the test realm patch notes at the link below.

Jagex Opens (Limited) Members Skills To Free Players

scaperune3

In 2012, Jagex opened up a 14-day free trial for free to play players. The account is limited in regards to trading and acquiring items, and once the 14-day free trial ends, any items that are members only are unable to be used until that player purchases a subscription. With today’s release of the March developer blog, Jagex has announced some upcoming changes to the way free players are able to experience membership without the need to actually pay. Instead of a 14-day trial, free players will have access to a limited amount of the members world, as well as very limited access to members skills.

Talking of free players, we’re changing the trial system so that new players once again start off as a free player. To do this, we’re making Burthorpe and Taverley part of the free game, as well as the associated quests and training areas within it. We are also allowing free players to train members’ skills up to a maximum of level 5, giving them a taster of the kind of content there is on offer for players who subscribe.

The blog post also details Jagex’s continued fight against player-run gambling outfits.

Other alterations we intend to make this month are changes centred around the flower games and associated ‘risk’ gameplay that currently dominates the Grand Exchange. Exactly what these changes are and what form they take is going to be up to you – we’ve built a variety of solutions from rules changes, content changes and even our own versions of the games – and we’re planning on chatting to you to work out what solution works best for the community. Keep an eye on the news for details.

How To Get Into The Neverwinter Beta Free

neverwinter-20110603050434575_640w

I know what you’re thinking: Omali, I want to play the Neverwinter beta, but I don’t want to buy some ridiculous copy of PC Gamer magazine just to take part in the beta. Well good news, you can accomplish both. All you have to do is follow the instructions below:

  1. Head over to play.google.com
  2. Click on Magazines and find PC Gamer
  3. Opt to subscribe with the 14 day free trial. You will not be charged.
  4. Go to promo.pcgamer.com/neverwinter
  5. Follow the instructions using the same billing information you provided to Google.
  6. You may have to answer a question related to the issue. The magazine can be viewed on your desktop.
  7. Get your key and use it at Playneverwinter.com
  8. Cancel your trial subscription to PC Gamer. You won’t be charged.

This way everyone is happy. You got your hands on a free copy of PC Gamer and a beta key for Neverwinter, and a free horse mount to top it off. Meanwhile PC Gamer gets the satisfaction of bringing joy to someone’s heart, even if they are doing it for free. Granted this means nothing if you already subscribe to PC Gamer.

Age of Conan: Double The Free, Double The Play

RGA_conanbarbarian460

Were you excited when Age of Conan went free to play, and then dismayed when you found out the restrictions on classes and dungeons? Boy do I have good news for you. Apparently Funcom has rehired into the “give everything for free” department, as following the announcement of The Secret World becoming buy to play, Age of Conan has been updated to remove some of the restrictions from free players. Players will find that all classes have been unlocked, regardless of subscription status, and that free players can now accumulate up to ten gold. Additionally, all classic dungeons up to level 80 have been unlocked for free players.

World of Warcraft Mobile App Now Free For All

Good news, World of Warcrafters, your game just became a little bit freer. As a convenience service, Blizzard launched the World of Warcraft remote. This service allows players to connect to the auction house remotely, chat with their guild, review prices, and bid on items even if their character is not at an auction house. Up until now, this service cost about $3 a month on top of your regular Warcraft subscription. As announced today, Blizzard has made all of the features of WoW Remote available for free.

Starting today, all of the features that were previously part of the optional World of Warcraft Remote subscription service are now available for free to all World of Warcraft subscribers.

Players who had already been paying for WoW Remote have received a thank you note, as well as 7 free days of game time and a non-combat pet.
