Call of Duty, WoW Classic Make Activision Blizzard Mucho Dinero

The success of World of Warcraft Classic could only come as a shock to J. Allen “You think you do but you don’t” Brack, but to the rest of the world the idea that the classic servers brought back a lot of players isn’t surprising in the least.

Activision released their third quarter statements for 2019 and the results are pretty great for them. With sales from Call of Duty BLOPS 4 and WWII still strong and World of Warcraft Classic leading the way, Activision hauled in $1.28 billion dollars compared to $1.51 billion in 2018. World of Warcraft Classic drove subscriptions to its highest quarterly increase in franchise history while Candy Crush somehow continues to grow in revenue. In addition, the launch of Call of Duty Mobile has been a major success in terms of downloads and revenue.

Despite recent controversy, Blizzard has created a good amount of hype with the announcement of Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV at this year’s Blizzcon.

The quarter ends on September 30 and does not reflect any potential consumer reaction to the Blitzchung Hearthstone controversy, nor does it include sales from the latest Modern Warfare title.

Pearl Abyss Announces $1 Billion In Black Desert Online Revenue

Black Desert Online developer Pearl Abyss is breaking out the name brand Lunchables this week, and with good reason. The developer announced today that Black Desert has raked in one billion dollars in gross sales across all platforms. The title is available in over 150 countries and boasts 18 million users.

Robin Jung, CEO of Pearl Abyss, commented;

“We’re proud of what this achievement represents – the hard work and dedication from our teams over the past four years and the support from a community of fans around the world. With over 30% of gross sales for Black Desert stemming from mobile platforms, which saw an initial release in Asia in the past year, we’re confident that sales are accelerating. Pearl Abyss is optimistic for the future of Black Desert, and we look forward to launching Black Desert Mobile globally by the end of the year.”

Pearl Abyss formed in 2010 with a team of just seven employees. The company has expanded massively since then, and in 2017 acquired Eve Online developer CCP Games. In 2018, Pearl Abyss launched the remastered update for Black Desert Online while also working on expanding into the console sector.

Virtual Stable Sells For $5600

Science_Tent

Entropia Universe is well known here at MMO Fallout for its ridiculous sales of virtual estate for real money. Entropia Universe AB announced today that the MMORCE (Massively Multiplayer Online Real Cash Economy) game has successfully completed its first stable auction, and the results might just astound you. Over $58 thousand real dollars were spent by players to get their hands on thirteen virtual stables. The most expensive stable sold for $5600.

What’s so great about these stables that someone would pay nearly six grand for it? Stables are able to accumulate wealth by renting out stalls and offering specialized training to other players in return for PED, which can be cashed out for real money. Theoretically, given an upcoming update that will place more importance on stables, each of the buyers are likely to come out with a profit. A real profit, of real money.

The sales are as follows:

Stables Estates on Planet Calypso
Cape Corinth Stable – Eugenio Anhithe Wilde – $5000
Emerald Lakes Stable – Gunnar MRmP Pettersen – $4280
Fort Ithaca Stable – Kassandra Blackwidow Draconis – $4300
Nate Valley Stable – Gandalf GandalfSzary Szary – $4800
Port Atlantis Stable – Jenna Star Mercury (for investors) – $6100
Twin Peaks Stable – Matek Matek Barbods – $6200

Lineage's 1.8 Billion Dollar, uh, Lineage

11

Lineage is NCSoft’s most successful title to date, launching in 1998 and still going strong fifteen years later in Korea and not in North America or Europe where the game was decidedly less popular. Still, Lineage has quite a following in Korea, Japan, China, and several other territories. With the game’s fifteen year anniversary a couple months behind it, NCSoft has revealed that Lineage has raked in $1.8 billion in sales. On second thought, that doesn’t sound impressive enough. Think of it as two trillion won, or ?2,000,000,000,000.

If South Korea celebrated Thanksgiving, I imagine the folks at NCSoft would be stuffing their turkey with money today.

Champions Online: 1,000% More Money

Atari, and by extension Cryptic

By now this type of news shouldn’t be too surprising, and I doubt anyone expected to see a headline: “Cryptic announces major loss in revenue after move to free to play.” As Turbine, Sony, and more have proven before us, the seeming majority who bash everything with a free option and a cash shop ultimately turn up as a very vocal, very tiny minority. There are, of course, those who will claim that Champions Online will have died without making the switch, and they are probably correct in that assessment.

However, if Cryptic Studios is going anywhere now, they’re going to the bank. According to Cryptic, the number of unique logins, concurrent players, and revenue have spiked over 1,000% since the game went free last month. To celebrate, Cryptic is placing a one-hour xp boost in the Cryptic Store for free, limited one per account. If you’re jonesing for some quick cash, the item is apparently tradeable, so save it and see if someone will buy it for a good amount of in-game money.

Having Champions Online free to play will be an interesting move in the months/year to come, as this means more competition for City of Heroes and DC Universe. Will the competition have to adapt to survive? Will Iron Man have to face his one true fear in order to defeat his nemesis? Find out all this and more! On the next issue of Amazing Issues of Amazing Amazements!

Since it had to be asked: Does Bill Roper regret leaving Cryptic now? Someone just missed a fat bonus check.
