Impressions: Riders of Icarus

Launcher 2016-07-03 12-12-27-12

(Disclosure: Nexon provided a review key so we could get into the head start)

My initial reaction to Riders of Icarus fell into the disturbingly common pit of “oh look, another Korean MMO with a gimmick.” Several closed beta tests later, not to mention giving away literally thousands of keys, and I can safely say that this game definitely blew away my expectations.

Riders of Icarus allows for one of two keyboard setups, with the first geared toward TERA players and the second for fans of the more traditional MMO. Even if you’re sick of the World of Warcraft number roll, I suggest choosing that over the action-oriented system. Suffice to say, it is effective broken at the moment.

As you level up, combat in Riders of Icarus becomes more geared toward putting together combos anyway. Combo moves allow you to string together attacks in a way that is devastating while not forcing you to memorize your hotbar or move items around the screen. In addition, they are forgiving enough that if lag or a slipped finger hits the wrong button, you can generally pick up with another key stroke. Moves in Icarus pack a punch, and I never get tired of the crunch effect that plays when I kick a mob two feet into the air.

Given that this is a free to play game, inevitably the question comes to the cash shop. In 2016, can we finally have a newly released free to play game that doesn’t have a ridiculous cash shop? Absolutely. The cash shop consists of lucky boxes (skins for familiars), convenience items, boosters, and outfits. Cash shop items are bought with Ellum, which can also be obtained in game. The shop isn’t perfect, I’m sure many players will take umbrage with the 100% HP/Mana flasks that are sold.

Icarus also offers premium service, a subscription that can be bought in 30, 90, and 180 day packages. Premium offers daily potion stipends, 20% experience boosts, free use of transit shrines, bonus Ellum, and more.

Riders of Icarus is a blessing, or a curse depending on how you look at it, for collectors. Taming familiars is a major feature of the game, and there are a lot of creatures to collect. Running through each zone, effectively any non-bipedal creature can be tamed and collected. Right now my collection consists of two reindeer, two horses, two birds, a couple wolves, and a kangaroo-esque creature called a “Woodland Joey.”

Taming itself is where the game errs at Pokemon. You’re better off weaking your foe before you attempt to tame them, at which point the game turns into a rodeo mini-game that relies partially on pressing the right buttons when they show up and half on pure dumb luck. Higher level familiars will require more intricate measures of taming, such as collecting certain items or jumping off of a cliff onto them, but there’s nothing quite like seeing players zooming around above on their tamed dragons.

Familiars are a project in themselves, as they gain experience, level up, and geared up for combat. Familiar leveling adds a nice side-progression to the game since your familiar is constantly gaining experience through the simple act of traveling or just sitting around. They can be turned into pets, assisting players in combat, or sacrificed and used to gear up your equipment in the name of higher stats.

One of the largest issues facing Riders of Icarus right now is the fact that this is a Nexon game, and as such you can guarantee that gold farmers are numerous and not just operating unabated, but with help from the developer themselves. It took a guild member explaining why the ignore feature wasn’t blocking gold spam. Ignoring users doesn’t block global or regional chat, just whispers and party invites. In other words, it is completely useless and chat right now has been deserted sans the same five bots spamming their respective websites.

The other big issue is the fact that mobs have very small movement ranges, you’ll recognize this in other games where an NPC will pull back to its accepted area of movement and go back to full health. It doesn’t crop up as much on standard enemies, but fighting bigger boss monsters gets very annoying when you use a range attack and they rush up, hit you, then immediately run back.

Otherwise, Riders of Icarus is shaping up to be an excellent themepark MMO. If you’re the kind of person who hates questing being the main form of leveling, this game isn’t going to appeal much. For everyone else, Icarus is well deserving of its current “mostly positive” rating on Steam.

Right now my focus is on hitting the current level cap, 25 at least until the game goes into full open beta on the 6th.

Rumored Division Open Beta Is True, Coming February 18th

tctd_open-beta_news_238105

Last week’s rumors of an open beta coming for The Division have proven true, as Ubisoft has announced that gamers on Xbox, PC, and PS3 will be able to get in and play in just about a week and a half. Xbox One players will have a one day bonus, gaining access on February 18th with PC and Playstation receiving access the next day. The beta for all three systems runs until February 21st, barring the moderate possibility that technical issues delay the beta past a reasonable point, as seems to happen every now and then.

In addition to the beta news, Ubisoft notes that most of the cheating issues that plagued the PC closed beta have been fixed and will be ready to roll out for launch. Anyone who plays the open beta will also receive a unique item that will carry over to launch on March 8th.

Chronicle Servers Going Offline For Open Beta

wilderness_large

Jagex has revealed that Chronicles, the card game based on the RuneScape game series, has shut down as of February 8th. In an announcement posted on the official website, the servers are shutting down for approximately six weeks in order to prepare the game for open beta. During that time, the dev team is adding in more features, balancing, and infrastructure to provide a better experience for customers.

When the beta returns in March, players can expect Venescula, the fifth legend character, arriving alongside more than forty new cards. Alongside Venescula is Dungeoneering, a skill that tasks players with PvP challenges in return for coins, gem shards, and platinum. The legends you have will have the ability to be outfitted with cosmetic customizations and improving skills with experience gained after each fight. Finally, two new locations (one previewed above) and improved client performance will be coming alongside open beta launch.

Players who participated in the closed beta will receive an exclusive card back, title, emblem, and coin chest. The open beta is the last time that Chronicles will wipe player progress.

Following its successful Kickstarter campaign and closed beta testing period, Face of Mankind will be entering open beta on April 18th according to the latest announcement by Nexeon. Players eager to get in can register their account and start downloading the client now.

On April 16th, we will be wiping the Closed Beta and giving our dedicated testers and backers early access to the game. As there will be no wipe during Open Beta, we felt it was important to make sure this promised reward was delivered prior to Open Beta to ensure the largest impact.

The drawbridge has been lowered and the hoards are rolling in. Ubisoft has opened up the Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, dropping the NDA and bringing the game into open beta. Choose from three available heroes (with a fourth available through a cash pack) and hire minions to defend your loot. Raid your friend’s castles and bring their defenses down and steal from their coffers.

Check it out at the link below. Keep in mind that, given this is open beta, a wipe is always possible if called for, although none are planned at this time.

Path of Exile Unveils $12 Thousand Founder Pack

PathOfExile_Act3_2

The $200 Marvel Heroes “Access Everything” pack doesn’t seem so ridiculous all of a sudden, does it? Path of Exile’s closed beta turned in a sum of $2.5 million thanks to the sale of collaborator packs, allowing the game to continue development and funding Grinding Gear Games for now and into the future. With the launch of the game’s open beta, GGG has turned to selling open beta supporter packs that include cash shop currency, exclusive pets, titles, digital soundtracks, and more. The cost of each individual pack starts at thirty bucks and goes all the way up to over twelve thousand dollars.

Sure you could invest that twelve grand into something intelligent like a used car, an Associate’s Degree, paying off your debts, a down payment on a house, the stock market, investment bonds, mutual funds, bathing in gold dollars, making it rain, bribing a politician, buying your way into office in a small town, investing in the future of MMO Fallout, I’ve forgotten what we were talking about. Ah, yes, twelve grand. For $12,500 USD, you receive a number of weapon effects, vanity pets, a Path of Exile logo and Tabula Rasa t-shirt, skill tree poster, another poster that is signed, a keychain, two stickers, your name in the credits, a unique item based on your design, designing a custom monster, a physical model of said monster, ten codes for an in-game pet for said monster, and free international shipping.

Then again, anyone who purchases the twelve thousand dollar package likely has enough money that the investment is a drop in the bucket. You can check out all of the packages at the link below.

MMOrning Shots: City of Steam Open Beta

headersoftlaunch

Set your alarms for 10pm eastern and don’t wake up until then, because the City of Steam open beta is here. While the game is still in beta, there will not be any more wipes once the servers get up and running tonight. So no complaining, otherwise I’m going to hit you with this shoe. You can’t see it because this is text, but I’m holding it in my hand. It looks heavy and the heel is rather hard.

MMOrning Shots is a (somewhat) daily line of screenshots from various MMOs. Most are taken in-house or come to us in press releases, but if you would like your screenshot featured, send it over to contact[at]mmofallout[dot]com with the subject “MMorning Shots.”

CCP had already combined both servers last week allowing the two communities to begin commingling. DUST mercenaries are able to take on contracts by Eve Online players with the goal of attacking or defending territory on planets based in Eve Online’s universe.

End of Nations Postponed Until Further Notice

End of Nations will not be entering open beta at any time in the near future. Trion’s upcoming MMORTS has been in closed beta for some time, and in a post on the official Facebook page, Trion notes that while the beta has offered a lot of good feedback, it has also brought to light some glaring issues that need to be fixed.

“As a result, we have decided to postpone the Open Beta phase of testing until further notice. We will let you know as soon as we have an update. Those players who made an End of Nations purchase should expect to receive a follow-up email shortly. Thank you in advance for your continued input and support. It is greatly appreciated.”

It’s good to see that Trion is refunding closed beta players, and hopefully Trion will be able to fix whatever needs to be fixed in End of Nations.

Take Note Others, Aika Cracks Down on Harassment

Why hello, ladies.

Here is a question to all of my…Runescape peeps out there. How many times have you had someone report you, maliciously, for something that was not against the rules, just to harass you? In all likelihood, at least a few. Now, Jagex claims that rule 10: abusing customer service does result in a punishment, however I have never heard of anyone getting much more than a warning for clogging up the customer support.

Earlier this week, Aika released the full list of rules, not only the rules but the punishment associated with breaking said rules. To put it lightly, gPotato is looking to provide “an experience at a very high standard.” (Their words, not mine) To put it more plainly, gPotato will not allow Aika to turn into other free games that we’ve seen, let’s single out Combat Arms for this comparison, the kind populated by children who can barely spell the insults they are flinging.

  • Sending in a false abuse report on a player will result in a permanent ban on the first offense. If the character is new (unsure what this constitutes) than any accounts from that IP address will be banned as well, permanently.
  • Impersonating other players may result in a permanent ban.
  • Falsifying information about Gala-Net, Aika, and other players may also result in a permanent ban.
  • Inappropriate guild demeanor will result in a ban for all guild members.
  • Disrupting in-game events by harassing event coordinators may result in a permanent ban.
  • NPC blocking may result in a permanent ban.
  • Not taking offenses seriously (deliberately breaking the rules as a joke) may result in a permanent ban.

This is a comprehensive list of what can result in a permanent ban, and although some of these are pretty straightforward, I can see some eyebrows being raised at the grey areas. For instance, will the rule on “false abuse reports” allow free reign for griefing, because the players with their fingers on the report button are too afraid of gPotato not seeing the situation as they did, and receiving a permanent ban?

Or disrupting in-game events, or even NPC blocking. If any of you can give me a clear, concise explanation as to the process behind “npc blocking,” then by all means leave a comment below. My favorite of the list is without a doubt the last: Not taking offenses seriously, which can result in a permanent ban. How exactly does this work?

Harassing player = Temporary mute
Harassing player with a smiley face or an LOL in the message = Permanent ban?

Is there a form of numerical quantification where someone’s seriousness of a situation can be determined? At what angle must a person’s smirk be before it is considered not taking an offense seriously, where a temporary ban becomes permanent? It sounds like anything that is determined to be trolling is punishable by a permanent ban, but how do you determine who is cheating for an edge, and who is simply doing it for the lulz?

I’m going to keep this issue up and will be contacting gPotato as soon as Aika becomes a valid game to query Customer Support over, and will be following this up hopefully with a direct explanation for the rules. Until then, more news on Aika as it appears.
