Watch Paladins On Mixer, Get Rewards

Hi-Rez Studios wants you to play Paladins, but they would also like you to watch Paladins. This month, Hi-Rez launched the Mixer store in Paladins that incentivizes players to watch game streams for rewards. By linking your Mixer account and watching Paladins streams, you’ll receive coins that can be redeemed for skins and other cosmetics.

Players who link their accounts will receive a quest for a limited Khan skin (as shown above). The mixer store is only around for a limited time, and points are obtained at a rate of 1 per 12 minutes.

Shroud of the Avatar Community Wants Free Offline Access To Perks

shroud

What do you do when your game sells items for real money but also includes a separate offline mode that can’t reasonably be regulated by the developer? For Shroud of the Avatar, the folks at Portalarium figures that no matter what their stance on the issue, there is little doubt that hackers will figure out a way to nab those cash shop items for free. So why not do everyone a favor, since the only impact the player can have is on their own world, and give everyone access to exclusive items in offline mode?

The idea was polled, and so far the response has been in overwhelming agreement. 96.5% of the voting community, approximately 860 votes as of this publishing, agree that it is OK for all add on and pledge rewards to be available in offline mode. This obviously comes with a caveat that items will need to be crafted, with the biggest and best stuff becoming end-game content, and that numerous items will have no real effect in offline mode like Fyndoro’s Tablet, an item that is used to find other players.

Community response to the idea has been overwhelmingly positive, especially from those who had invested serious money into the game:

I have 5k in and my greatest concern is someone will feel I bought a advantage over them. That’s not what I want. I like the nick nacks, their cool, but I don’t want anyone to feel its pay to play outside of the basic costs for the game.

And not all of the ‘no’ votes were against the idea entirely, with many citing the extra development time required to turn the items into craftables and figure out balancing.

I don’t really care either way, but voted NO because I do not want the developers wasting any time on making the items craftable. Just put them all on a special vendor and be done with it please.

If you add up all the hats, cloaks, costumes, weapons, armor, prosperity items etc. you would probably have at least 100 new items, each one requiring a unique recipe. How many unique recipes for hats alone are needed? Can it even be done without adding new ingredients?

How do you feel about pledge items, considering they can run a pretty penny, being available to players for free in offline mode? Let us know in the comments below.

NCSoft Lowering Hero Coin Costs

3_DatailPage_700x339

Lineage II’s Hero Coin program launched approximately three months ago to some heavy criticism over the outrageously expensive reward system. As players spend more NCoin, they receive Hero Coins that can be spent on items in the reward store. We began to question just how much NCSoft expects some of its players will spend, as Hero Coins reset annually and some of the rewards require spending in excess of thirty thousand dollars.

NCSoft announced on the Lineage II website that prices for most items are being dropped by at least 40%. In addition, NCSoft is running promotions to increase Hero Coin gains. The move is unlikely to quell criticism of the game selling rare and valuable equipment at expensive prices.

Lineage II Top Reward Costs $200k Within A Year

3_DatailPage_700x339

As I always start these types of articles: If you are the type of person who is willing to spend five or six figures in a video game, why not take a little bit of that money and invest it in something more sensible, like MMO Fallout? Everyone wins. You get to keep spending insane amounts of cash on virtual goods, and we have more capability to tell you where you can spend a lot of money. Lineage II has revealed the hero coin program, allowing players to earn rewards for the simple act of spending their cash. The way the system works is simple: For every 80 NCoin you spend in Lineage II, you receive one Hero Coin that can be saved up and spent on items in the reward store.

Here’s where the deal gets controversial. First, Hero Coins only accumulate on the character that the item was redeemed on. Secondly, Hero Coins expire on the following January 1st of every year. There are items on the cash shop that translate into well over $30 thousand being spent on the game in a single year, with the most expensive item going over three hundred grand. You can laugh and, when you come to the realization that at least one person will hit that transaction mark, slowly dissolve into tears.

Defiance And Rift Raptr Rewards

Defiance 2013-04-10 21-41-09-94

Here at MMO Fallout, we love Raptr for the fact that it is like an Xfire client that tracks game time, and gives us free stuff just for playing games. No surveys, no advertisements, no subscriptions, no deals, none of that stupid crap you get from other clients. It’s just a game developer looking for publicity, so they go to Raptr and say “hey, we want to give some stuff away.” That stuff can be anything from full games to in-game items, and is usually in-game items. The catch? To obtain most of the rewards, you have to have played a certain amount of game time with the Raptr client running. The Raptr client runs in the background, out of sight and out of mind, ticking your play hours.

Trion has a number of items available for Rift players, including a Tartagon mount, a two headed tortoise for players who reach hardcore status, a pet modeled after the Raptr mascot, and a helmet. For Defiance, the rewards aren’t going to be unlocked until July 3rd and include a starter pack (boosts and a lockbox), elite drifter pack (outfit), a Raptr-themed vehicle. Players can grab a 30% off coupon for Defiance starting the 20th if they are ranked dedicated or above in one of the following titles:

Assassin’s Creed III (PC)
BioShock Infinite (PC)
Blacklight Retribution (PC)
Borderlands 2 (PC)
Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition (PC)
Diablo III (PC)
Firefall (PC)
Guild Wars 2 (PC)
PlanetSide 2 (PC)
Rift (PC)
Star Wars: The Old Republic (PC)
Warframe (PC)
World of Warcraft (PC)

There is only a limited amount of these rewards (five thousand for the Defiance and three thousand for the Rift rewards) so nab them while you can. As always, MMO Fallout will try to get our hands on some codes which we will place on our Twitter feed. Follow @mmofallout for updates and codes.

Omali Was Wrong: Defiance On Steam

defiances

Hey folks. Get out your cricket bats, set your clocks one hour behind, and make sure your household knows you won’t be home for dinner, because it’s time for another episode of Omali Was Wrong. Not too long ago, I wrote a column about how Defiance on Steam was only at 33% toward the first tier of pre-purchase rewards with about two weeks to go before launch. In my defense, I did point out that using the reward level to gauge reception would have been inaccurate, given all of the variables to why Steam’s pre-purchase numbers would be low.

Regardless, you can all celebrate in my being completely off the mark. In the past week, Defiance has not just hit reward tier 1, it has surpassed all of (my) expectations and all three reward tiers will be unlocked. So if you were holding out on pre-purchasing via Steam until everything was unlocked, now is your time to shine.

The three Steam tiers come with extra stuff for your character in Defiance, plus a free copy of Rift and a discount off of the DLC season pass. Defiance launches April 2nd on PC, PS3, and 360.

Raptr Increases Rift Player Retention

Rift-chart

Last year, Trion partnered with Raptr to bring exclusive Rift rewards to the game-tracking platform. By playing Rift, or other qualifying games, and ranking up in Raptr’s system, players were able to get their hands on a free copy of Rift. Through ranking up in Rift, they were then able to obtain some exclusive items, including pets, mounts, and a digital upgrade. In a case study posted on the Raptr website, the promotion went very well.

The goal of RIFT’s Raptr Rewards program was two-fold: attract new players into the RIFT universe, and give existing Rift players more reason to return or to further engage with the game. To meet both these targets, Trion Worlds and Raptr offered four distinct tiers of rewards based on a player’s activity levels within RIFT or other related role-playing games.

According to the case study, Rift saw a 470% increase in daily active numbers, with daily playtime per player increasing 58%. The entire case study can be read at the link below, but the final conclusion is that when developers give back to their community, either by lowering the barrier of access or by giving incentives to continue playing, everyone ultimately benefits. Also not specifically noted would be the conclusion that everyone loves swag.
