Daybreak Game Company Discussing EQ2 Server Consolidation

gu60_drunder03

Daybreak Game Company has expanded upon an earlier announcement that Everquest II servers will be merged. The term that executive producer Holly Longdale is going for is “consolidation,” meaning that the servers will be closed completely with players shuffled over to new servers, rather than simply merging a lower population server into another.

Those players moving will get a title naming their original server that can be worn with pride! And we will run a vote for the servers being consolidated to choose a new name for the new server based on the recent submissions we’ve had. We don’t know which servers yet, but that’s our next task.

The technology to implement server consolidation isn’t quite done, however the team plans on testing to begin later this  month. Server consolidation for other regions will take place after, and more information overall should be coming within the next few weeks.

LOTRO Will Merge Down To Ten Servers

press_pack_big_battles_01

We learned back in May of Turbine’s plans to merge the Lord of the Rings Online servers, but the company has finally come forward with more specific details on the hows, the whens, and the wheres. All but ten servers will close as part of the merger, five in the US and five in Europe, with players from affected servers being given free transfers to any one of the ten remaining.

We will begin the transfer process by opening the test world, Bullroarer, for character copy. We will then open transfers between the 10 remaining worlds. Then the worlds that are closing will be opened for transfer, a few at a time, in the order they are listed below. Please watch the website, forums, and launcher for announcements regarding timing. *Note: Brandywine will be unavailable for incoming transfers for a time until population and load can be re-evaluated on new hardware.*

While ten servers remain, the announcement notes that Brandywine will not be available as a transfer destination until the server can be moved to upgraded hardware.

TERA Sees Population Boost After Steam Launch

TERA_Header

TERA is celebrating a boom in traffic, both from the recent launch on Steam and release of the new gunner class. While the team at En Masse Entertainment has increased server capacity over the past month, heavy population has resulted in queues during peak times. To move the population around, a new PvE server will launch on June 9th.

Highwatch opens Tuesday, June 9 following server maintenance and will be available to new characters and transfers from all servers. Server transfers will be free for a limited time, but transfers to Tempest Reach, Ascension Valley, and Celestial Hills are temporarily suspended.

Free server transfers will open on June 9th and run until maintenance on the 16th. Steam Charts puts TERA at a peak of more than 25 thousand concurrent players on Steam alone.

Wildstar Announces Server Mergers

WildStar64 2014-05-08 13-12-45-60

Mega servers are the future, at least in the sense that they allow developers to merge servers without using the term and acting like there is nothing to worry about with the population. Wildstar developer Carbine Studios has revealed that the fledgling MMO will soon see its servers merged similar to DC Universe Online, with one PvE and one PvP server per cluster.

Going the Megaserver route means that we vastly increase server capacity allowing for greater critical mass of our player base, resulting in more people, more groups, more activity and more raids… more of everything that makes WildStar so fun. The Megaservers and their increased player capacity will give fans more options to group up and enjoy WildStar with friends and other players for a long time to come.

To avoid name conflicts, all players will be given a last name.

RuneScape Temporarily Alters Death Mechanics

dtPIE4V

If you haven’t heard, RuneScape is currently under intermittent attacks by an outside party. Given that dying in both versions will result in losing items, players are understandably demanding action by Jagex to protect players while still allowing them to play as much as possible. For the duration of these attacks, Jagex has altered their death mechanics. Gravestones in RuneScape 3 last fifteen minutes longer, allowing players time to reconnect and retrieve their items.

Old School RuneScape is also being updated with a change that still maintain’s the game’s more punishing death system:

If you are not in PvP combat when you die you will now have 30 minutes to return to your items. For the first minute of this timer your items will only be visible to you and for the remaining 29 minutes your items will be visible to everyone.

Players who lose items due to a loss of connection should contact technical support.

Dynasty Warriors Online Shutting Down

dynasty

Dynasty Warriors Online is the MMO adaptation of the long running hack and slash, and if you didn’t know it existed, well you understand why it is shutting down. Aeria Games posted a notice that the servers will close on January 10th, at around 8pm eastern. Any AP spent from today onward will be rebated back to the player’s account.

We know and understand this is both sad and frustrating. The closure of a game is always hardest for us at Aeria as we recognize the community’s dedication towards the game but regrettably games can’t last forever. We know it’s the community that matters most and we genuinely hope everyone gets to spend some quality time playing the game together with friends before it’s time to say goodbye.

Is it too late to ask for a Gundam Dynasty Warriors MMO?

Lessons From 2013 #2: Triumph of Old School

noedits

You can only hope that other developers are paying attention to Jagex. This year marked the announcement and launch of RuneScape’s Old School server, a separate service that originally launched as a snapshot of the MMO way back from August 2007, but has since evolved into its own game entirely. Updates are based entirely off of polls, with each addition being voted on separately and requiring 75% approval in order to be implemented. Rather than vote on ideas from the standard RuneScape ruleset, Old School has gone in a completely different direction with the implementation of features such as pvp worlds, where players are able to fight it out all over the world instead of being relegated to the wilderness.

We can only hope that more developers will see the value of classic servers.

Ragnarok Online 2 Sunsetting In Korea

ss_b11c54b5aec674182049328756e8730d885caa82.1920x1080Ragnarok Online 2 is shutting down in Korea. As reported by MMO Culture, Gravity has announced that the Korean servers will come down on December 23rd, and that services in North America and Europe will not be affected by the change. The shutdown notice points to a lack of players as the reason for the service being sunsetted, although it does include the possibility that the game may be revived in the future.

Rift Frees Inactive Character Names

riftfae1x

Losing your character name due to a server merger sucks, especially if you can’t find a new name because all of the good ones are taken up by people who haven’t logged in since the game first launched. The good news is that players who do end up losing their names when the servers merge on October 23rd will have a bigger pool of alternatives to choose from. Trion has announced that characters who have been inactive for a long time will have their names reset when the servers merge.

Trion has not detailed exactly what counts as “inactive,” but characters that fall into this pool will be contacted via email to warn account holders to log in before it is too late. If you don’t log in, well that’s on you.

If one of your characters is going to be impacted by this change, you’ll be getting an email from us in the next day or two with instructions. If you are one of these inactive characters and want to keep your name, you’ll just need to log in with that character before October 23rd.

FFXIV Impressions: Stop Teasing Me, Square, Let Me In

ffxiv_08292013_130902

Square Enix is a company that I desperately want to love, because they did what no other developer would do and came through on their promise to improve a failed MMO from the ground up. Apart from Darkfall and maybe one or two other titles, this doesn’t happen. You have companies like NCSoft who would rather fire everyone and chalk it off as a loss than take even the tiniest of risks in improving the product, Mythic Entertainment who will dump on their previous product to promote the next low-seller, and then you have Battleground Europe who respond to low subscribers by simply deleting any criticism. So the simple fact that FFXIV: A Realm Reborn exists is enough to earn Square Enix a lot of respect in my books.

First of all, let’s talk story. A Realm Reborn takes place after the events of Final Fantasy XIV 1.0, where the Garlean Empire invades Eorzea with the goal of military conquest, and Bahamut (the giant dragon from the end of game trailer) descends upon the world and destroys many of the major cities. When the attempt to contain Bahamut fails, the adventurers (players) are teleported a short distance into the future and in order to maintain continuity, no one remembers who they are or what they look like. Five years later, the adventurers begin appearing in Eorzea, ready to aid the land once again in the fight against monsters, the Garlean Empire, and a rising tide of evil.

ffxiv_08272013_122515

There’s a special five letter word I like to break out when referring to Square Enix: Inane. The company appears to be peppered with inanity from the very tip top all the way down to the bottom. Inane people who think that selling 3.5 million copies of Tomb Raider is a disappointment. Who greedily approved and released the shameful non-game that was Final Fantasy: All The Bravest. And finally, the people who designed the systems around Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. I could use this time to question why my pre order of FFXIV directly from Square required me to use the forums to receive a link to find my order (it was never sent to my email) so that I could go to a third party website, bring up a pre order code that came back as invalid. Oh wait, I have to put that code in another website which then generates my pre order code, which is different from the beta code and product code and even though I purchased the game directly from Square, not automatically applied to the account. Nevermind the fact that these websites were broken much of the time, returning an invalid code notice to people with valid codes without telling them that they were actually supposed to wait until predetermined dates before they could be entered, assuming they hadn’t been sent a code for the wrong region or just not at all.

And now let’s talk about server traffic, AFK, and the perception of customer value. Even post-launch, players have found themselves unable to log in with the most grueling of all errors: Error 1017, or “this world is full.” Why is the world full? Because everyone refuses to log off. Square Enix decided once again that they would not implement an auto-kick function. Couple high traffic with the fact that people will not log out in fear of losing their spot and you end up with a game where the servers are consistently full and the normal cycle of slots freeing up when someone logs off is mostly broken.

On the other hand, the game is a lot of fun when it does work, and you can hear more on that in Part 2 of our impressions piece coming later this week.
