RuneScape Temporarily Alters Death Mechanics

If you haven’t heard, RuneScape is currently under intermittent attacks by an outside party. Given that dying in both versions will result in losing items, players are understandably demanding action by Jagex to protect players while still allowing them to play as much as possible. For the duration of these attacks, Jagex has altered their death mechanics. Gravestones in RuneScape 3 last fifteen minutes longer, allowing players time to reconnect and retrieve their items.

Old School RuneScape is also being updated with a change that still maintain’s the game’s more punishing death system:

If you are not in PvP combat when you die you will now have 30 minutes to return to your items. For the first minute of this timer your items will only be visible to you and for the remaining 29 minutes your items will be visible to everyone.

Players who lose items due to a loss of connection should contact technical support.

RuneScape Hammered By Service Attacks

Jagex has put out a warning for players to avoid high risk content as the servers for both RuneScape and Old School are currently being disrupted by an ongoing targeted attack. More news is to come and Jagex has not ruled out the possibility of a rollback.

As you may be aware, we’re currently experiencing service disruption across both game and web services, this is affecting both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape.

We are aware that RuneScape (as well as other games) are being targeted by attacks which are causing connectivity issues for our players.

We are doing everything we can to mitigate any impact on your gameplay experience – our Systems Team are currently working to improve stability across our core hosting platform to improve the situation.

Whilst this is ongoing, we would strongly suggest that you do not partake in dangerous/high-risk content such as PvP or high level PvM and as always, don’t risk anything you’re not prepared to lose.

How City of Heroes Could Have Avoided The Press

I’ve known about negotiations between unnamed buyers and NCSoft to purchase City of Heroes, the fact that attempts to buy the game have been ongoing since it shut down in 2012 should be of little surprise to anyone given the game’s fiercely loyal fanbase and revenue margin. I haven’t run any stories on it, and not because it was requested of me to keep the matter quiet (and it was), but because the story doesn’t have a whole lot of meat to it. Truth be told, there are always attempts by developers and indie outfits to purchase defunct MMOs and nine times out of ten nothing comes as a result of the “negotiations.” To write a story about the potential deal would only serve as a hype piece, and to provide a scapegoat for the community if and when the negotiations finally fell through.

And then Massively wrote an article, and what do you know? There are some who not only have already blamed Massively for messing up the deal, but are claiming that it was an intentional act of sabotage.

Justin’s articles are always belittling CoH and the fact that the playerbase continues to try. (Mostly because of his inherent hard-on for SWG.)

 

I saw that to and am annoyed.  My trust in massively.com has gone down because of that.  Like, seriously can’t they respect us until we got more details and the deal comes through?  Can’t they wait for this deal and the team to finish or fail before posting about it?  But the way Justin talks it’s clear he doesn’t give a crap.  :/

 

On the other hand it has been requested time and again that people keep it low key while the negotiations are going on, so if Justin really does have some sort of animosity towards CoH and the associated community posting an article on Massively right at a time when negotiations are supposed to be at a critical stage could be a very deniable way to try to hinder the deal. 

 

It almost seems like it was done purposefully. If the guy scoured the forum pages in an effort to undermine the effort, then he is truly a spiteful, little, miserable man. 

If the team negotiating the deal didn’t want the situation being discussed, they shouldn’t have discussed it. Rather than keeping the situation quiet, however, small updates on the negotiations have trickled out onto the publicly available forums of the game’s most popular fansite, by a moderator of said forums, in a thread stickied to the top of the category called “new efforts,” in the section labeled “task force hail mary,” with a timeline of said statements compiled in the original post, with more than two hundred thousand views and nine thousand replies.

The answer to not wanting publicity is to not talk about the matter publicly. Loose lips sink ships, and a major gaming press website writing a story about this was guaranteed to happen sooner or later with chatter on the Titan forums growing larger every day. If anything, the surprise is that it took this long for a news site to jump on board.

Hellgate On Steam Greenlight

For a game that has been in maintenance mode since 2012, Hellgate Global is a very fun title and completely free now that the full game and Tokyo expansion are available for free. In an effort to expand the game’s audience to those who have never heard of it or assumed that the game was still offline under Flagship Studios, T3Fun has put Hellgate Global on bid for Steam Greenlight. Next ArcheAge Test Coming August 22nd

ArcheAge beta tests are like the McRib, they only come around for a little while and the next event is always sooner than you think. Whether you’re itching to get in for the first time or have already tested ArcheAge and are hungry for more (or have to wait out your prison sentence), you’ll be glad to hear that the next closed beta event begins August 22nd and goes through August 27th. Your crops will pick up exactly where they left off at the end of the previous event.

What’s new? Now you can play ArcheAge in English, German, and even French. Beta Event 3 keys will not be valid this time around, but you’ll be able to grab a key from a number of partner sites (not MMO Fallout, we’re not a partner site) in the coming days. Perfect World Entertainment Posts Q2 2014 Finances

Perfect World Entertainment has posted their second quarter income for 2014 and the results are looking pretty good. For the second quarter, total revenues amounted to $149.6 million USD, an increase by about 4% over last quarter. Gross profit similarly increased by a small margin to $109.4 million with operating profit decreased nearly 30% to $20.7 million. CEO Robert Xiao attributed much of the increase in revenue to the success of client-based games like Swordsman Online and the publishing of Dota 2 in China.

Expenses rose in the second quarter due to an increase in sales and marketing as well as research and development. For the next quarter, Perfect World Entertainment expects an increase in revenue between 3-8%.

Old School: One Last Shot At Artisan

Old School RuneScape launched as a snapshot of the MMO as it was back in 2007, and since then has updated with a ton of new content all sourced from the forums and approved by a majority of players via content polls. With the variety of content added, Old School RuneScape has pretty much established itself as a separate product, and not just a classic RuneScape experience. One of the largest content additions put up to player approval has been Artisan, a new skill that does not exist in RuneScape 3. The idea of Artisan is that the skill gathers from other skills to create new items.

Unfortunately the players have not voted to approve the skill over several re-imaginings. The latest dev blog details the most recent version of Artisan being presented for approval, noting that this is the final dev blog on the matter. The Artisan skill will have players receiving gathering and crafting tasks from artisan masters and will allow them to craft items and tools that will aid in everyday life. For one example, it will be possible to craft wieldable tools (saving inventory space) or creating slow-burn logs which burn longer and decreases odds for burning food.

In addition to voting on the addition of the skill, players will also have the ability to vote on individual items and see them added to existing skills if the Artisan skill as a whole does not pass.

Planetside 2 Playstation 4 Beta In 2014

Sony Online Entertainment took some time to speak about Planetside 2 at this year’s SOE Live. While they can’t promise anything, the goal is to have a beta version of Planetside 2’s Playstation 4 version available to players by the end of the year. The PC version is still on track for its regular updates, with this month bringing in new mentoring systems as well as new vehicles and battle islands which will introduce smaller scale combat areas and new objectives other than simply capturing territory.

PC and PS4 players will not play against one another when the latter comes out later this year.
