MMOrning Shots: Pale In The Moonlight

Fun fact: Today’s MMOrning Shot could not be uploaded in its original .png format because it somehow ended up being nearly sixty megabytes. Figure that one out.

Two MMOs Moving Overseas, Just Not Your Seas

archeage

Who wants an extra helping of disappointment today? Two MMOs are progressing into new territories, but judging by MMO Fallout’s metrics, they still aren’t coming to your territories. Mail.ru has announced that the closed beta for ArcheAge is set to start in December. Some of you may recall that mail.ru caught some heat over their planned payment system. Players were able to successfully petition the company to change their plans and adopt the Korean model.

Meanwhile, Blade & Soul’s open beta is set to begin next week in China. The open beta client is already available for download and the servers reportedly will not have an IP block, allowing anyone in who feels like joining up.

Gamigo has announced that their air combat MMO Heroes in the Sky will be shut down on December 3rd. Gamigo customers should have received a notice from the publisher with details on how they can transfer their accounts to the new host, GameUs.

Funcom's Third Quarter Finances

jomali

Funcom has released their third quarter results for 2013, and as usual the results are a mix of the good and the bad. Revenues in the third quarter amounted to $5.3 million, a decrease over the same time last year when The Secret World initially launched. A significant operating cost decrease combined with tax credits allowed for a $2.2 million cash flow compared to a slight loss in the previous quarter.

The main source of revenue for this past quarter came from The Secret World and Age of Conan, consistent with last quarter but lower than last year. Revenue in all games went down due to high profile game releases including Grand Theft Auto V. Work continues on the engine upgrade for Anarchy Online, and further initiatives are being pursued across all titles despite a relatively stable quarter for The Secret World and Age of Conan.

Funcom’s upcoming title, Lego Minifigures, is maintaining its development schedule, and was met with a positive response at its public showing in Cologne, Germany. The company expects lower revenue in the next quarter.

Pirates of the Burning Sea Registration Opens

potbs

Pirates of the Burning Sea is being rebuilt! At least that’s what the lizard people ushering in the new world order want you to think. Way back when, Flying Lab Software announced that they were parting ways with Sony Online Entertainment and moving their game over to Portalus Games. Since then, everything has been rather quiet on the western front. It appears that while existing players were able to transfer over to Portalus’ services, registration for new users has been down for some time.

While the official website still shows an under construction notice, it directs players to the Portalus website where they can register an account, make payments, and download the game client. If you’ve been waiting to get in since the SOE servers shut down, now is your chance.

Lineage II’s New Race Coming In 2014

Ceremony-of-Chaos_3

The fact that Lineage II launched ten years ago is hardly a deterrent for NCSoft, who continue adding in new content of rather substantial value on a decent basis, and it isn’t all just new areas and bigger toys to thwack creatures over the heads with. Last year, Lineage II players had the pleasure of witnessing a true rarity from the massive publisher: Rather than shut the game down and execute the studio, NCSoft admitted that a few years of poor decisions had left the game in a bit of a messed up state, and then did what few other MMO developers would do, they asked for feedback on how to go about fixing those problems.

The Ertheia is the newest race to come to Lineage II and is preparing to hit North American servers sometime next year to coincide with Lineage II’s ten year anniversary events. Check out the teaser trailer at the link below.

Star Citizen Calms Its Community

Hornets

Christopher Roberts, of the Roberts Space Industries brand, had some damage control to do this past weekend. Apparently a PS4 devkit was spotted on the desk of one of the developers and some members of the Star Citizen community, being of sound mind and invulnerable to over-the-top reactions, assumed that it could only mean that after gathering twenty seven million dollars in pledges and donations, that Star Citizen was ditching its PC development and moving over to be a PS4 exclusive. A perfectly reasonable assumption, like that time I called the police on my neighbor because he said “have a good day,” which could only mean that he was planning on murdering me that night.

Thankfully, Roberts clarified that Star Citizen is still coming to PC and will not be “dumbed down” for consoles, although he isn’t exactly saying no to a next gen release.

As far as consoles go Star Citizen will never be on the PS3 or Xbox 360. As for the next gen consoles, PS4 and Xbox One, we have NO CURRENT PLANS, but my stance remains open and is consistent with the many interviews I’ve given -IF the platform holders (Sony & Microsoft) allow us to update the code and data without restrictions and odious time consuming QC procedures, IF they allow our community to openly interact with each other across platforms then I would CONSIDER supporting them.

His emphasis, not mine.

[Community] The Despicable DDoS

ffxiv_09302013_094604

If I had a nickel for every time some individual or group launched a denial of service attack against a website or service that they didn’t like, I would put those nickels in a sock and use it to beat them unconscious. I’m old enough to remember a time when DDoS attacks were much more rare and feared not only because of how much they could cost in terms of damages or fees, but because they generally had some kind of motive behind them, be it retaliation or to even hold a service ransom. These days the denial of service attack has become so simple and accessible that people in RuneScape are using it on each other to gain an edge in player killing! Players in Garry’s Mod DOS each other’s servers and call it “competition.” The Garry’s Mod official forums itself is a regular target of denial of service attacks in response to bans targeting specific cheat programs.

The rate at which denial of service attacks are becoming increasingly common is disgusting, even more so when you look at how many of them are likely breaking things for the sake of breaking things. Big name developers like Jagex are being hit in retaliation by the gold farming criminals they ban, and the past two years alone saw attacks on Eve Online, Wurm, Darkfall, Dino Storm, Dofus, Perpetuum Online, TUG, Cubeworld, and countless more. Even Extra Life was not immune to the power of a few keyboard-wielding psychopaths.

As companies like Amazon and Google jump into the fray to bring more affordable protection to websites via cloud protection and mitigation, we can only hope that they will spell the death of the denial of service attack. Until then, when the method of delivery is about as complicated as logging into the Facebook account that you’re about to DOS, you can expect to see such attacks continue to propagate.
