Destiny Putting Older Consoles Into Maintenance Mode This Year

Cayde-6_1410173955

Gamers who haven’t made their way to the current generation of consoles will be disappointed to find out that Destiny’s next expansion, Rise of Iron, will not be available on their respective platforms. Set to launch in September, Rise of Iron will be exclusive to Playstation 4 and Xbox One. While The Taken King will still be available on older consoles, Bungie warns that future content will be limited on the 360 and PS3, including:

  • Future Game Updates and Content Releases
  • Some Destiny Events and Content
  • Purchasing Silver
  • Accessing new Eververse Item purchases across console generations
  • Some Destiny Companion features on the Mobile App and Bungie.net

Beginning in August, Bungie will be providing an account import tool to upgrade your characters to a newer system. According to the FAQ, upgrades must be within the same console family (PS3 to PS4, 360 to XOne), under the same ID, and not all content will transfer. In addition, older consoles will no longer receive major content updates.

The list of features being disabled on older consoles includes:

  • Trials of Osiris
  • Iron Banner
  • Live Events
  • Purchasing Silver
  • Cross-platform progress

Top MMOs That Need To Come To Consoles

Bloodshade1_cp0

The current generation of consoles have played host to a major surge in massively multiplayer games, with new titles releasing and being announced every month. To date, console gamers can enjoy titles like DC Universe, Planetside 2, Neverwinter, Final Fantasy XIV, Elder Scrolls Online, and more. With Star Trek Online recently announced for both Xbox and Playstation, MMO Fallout has decided to give its list of MMOs that need to make their way to the comfy couch.

MarvelHeroes2015 2015-06-26 22-49-05-29

1. Marvel Heroes

Now that Marvel Heroes has gamepad support, a launch on Xbox and Playstation is the next logical step. Imagine the appeal of sitting on your comfy couch and beating the crap out of Magneto as Captain America, or even as Magneto since he’s a playable hero now. Since both consoles support free to play fully, with open talks of cross-platform play, it isn’t entirely out of the question to see people on all three consoles playing together in harmony.

While Marvel Heroes hasn’t been confirmed for console launch, the prospect hasn’t been denied either. There were initially plans for release on PS3 and 360, which were scrapped after the game launched for a variety of reasons, including a need to focus resources on fixing what had been a heavily panned launch on PC.

2. Age of Conan

With Exiles set for release on consoles and Funcom on a tight budget, the odds of seeing Age of Conan come to Playstation and Xbox are probably slim to none. That being said, the game’s action combat could find itself perfectly at home with a controller, and the free to play model would introduce the game to a whole new category of gamer.

Incidentally, Age of Conan was also meant to come to consoles. Initially confirmed for launch on the Xbox 360, it took Funcom until 2011 to admit that the game wasn’t coming out, likely out of a combination of the poor reception of the PC version at launch and the technical limitations of the Xbox. Regardless, the game could find a new home on PS4/Xb1.

3. APB: All Points Bullet

Unlike the previous games on this list, APB is still hoping for a console launch, with Deep Silver confirming the game’s release in Q2 2015. While we are now one year late, and still without a current launch date, it is unknown exactly when the game will be coming out. Regardless, a third person shooter with cooperative/competitive elements is a sure fit for the consoles, albeit one that is now pretty dated.

You’ll notice a trend that these titles were previously confirmed for launch on Xbox 360 only to have their development quietly cancelled later on. A lot of developers wanted to be the first not-Final Fantasy MMO on Xbox 360, only to face the harsh realities of developing, releasing, and maintaining such a title and dealing with Microsoft’s policies of the time.

4. Champions Online

Since Star Trek Online and Neverwinter have console ports, it only makes sense to go back and bring back the title that started it all, Champions Online. Considering that, like most other games on this list, Champions Online was originally supposed to launch on the Xbox 360, it makes sense that Cryptic Studios already had a design drawn up on how to get the game working comfortably on consoles.

Much like Star Trek Online, Champions Online has a ton of content built up over years of development with fairly little competition on the consoles. Apart from DC Universe, there aren’t really any online super hero games to play on Xbox.

5. Heroes & Generals

It’s been a long time since console World War 2 shooters were fruitful and plenty. We haven’t seen a WW2 Call of Duty since 2008, Medal of Honor dropped out in 2007, Brothers in Arms was 2008, and Battlefield 2009. There is Battalion 1944 coming out in 2017, but otherwise the genre is pretty much dead on home consoles.

Heroes & Generals is just what the doctor ordered, a first person shooter that is still consistently updated, with plenty of replayability and a long progression system, and a genre that is ripe for the picking. Heroes & Generals is still in early access, so a console launch isn’t even being planned at this point while the PC version is finished.

Funcom Confirms The Park For May 3rd

The_Park_ScreenShot_3_3240

The Park is the first experimental title released under Funcom’s new development strategy and console players will be able to get in on the terror in the next couple of weeks. On their website, Funcom confirmed that the romp through the park of nightmares will be hitting Playstation 4 and Xbox One on May 3rd. The Park is the first console game released by Funcom in ten years, the last being Dreamfall on the original Xbox in 2006.

“We are thrilled to develop games for consoles again,” says Funcom CEO Rui Casais. “Not only because ‘The Park’ is a great fit for console gaming, but the process has also given us a lot of experience which we can use for some of our upcoming games, like ‘CONAN EXILES’.”

Originally released on PC last Halloween, The Park sold enough to meet all non-revenue related goals and kept in line with internal expectations, according to Funcom’s revenue reports which projected the title to not generate a significant source of revenue. Conan Exiles, an open world survival game set in Hyboria, is expected to launch on PC and consoles sometime later this year.

All Points Bulletin Coming To Consoles

apb

This console generation is a good time to play your favorite MMOs on the couch, or at least it will be over the next year or so. Already host to the likes of DC Universe Online and Final Fantasy XIV, we still have Planetside 2, Everquest Next, Warframe, Neverwinter, and SMITE coming to one or both consoles at some point in the future. Reloaded Productions is the latest title to jump on board the console wagon with the announcement that APB: Reloaded will be hitting Xbox One and Playstation 4 next year.

Reloaded Productions would like to allow players to transfer characters, but is meeting heavy resistance on the idea by Sony and Microsoft.

Neverwinter Coming To Xbox One

neverwinter_scourge_warlock_071414_3_wm

Perfect World Entertainment has announced that Neverwinter will be coming to Xbox One, set for launch in early 2015. The console version, according to PWE, will lose little in translation and players will be able to enjoy all of the same races, classes, and maps. According to the lead producer in a talk with IGN, module releases that are currently live on PC will be rolled out individually in a staggered schedule. The announcement does not specify exactly what is being lost in translation from PC to console, other than the obvious lack of keyboard and mouse. The Xbox One will use separate servers than those on PC, with the friend list derived from Xbox Live.

Last December, Perfect World Entertainment announced the opening of a new division focused on bringing their games to home consoles. Chinese gamers will be happy to know that Neverwinter launches on the Xbox One in China late this fall.

Elder Scrolls Online Delayed Six Months

eso 2014-04-04 14-43-47-01

With one month left until the launch of Elder Scrolls Online on the Xbox One and Playstation 4, Zenimax is in the unfortunate position of bearer of bad news. Due to “a number of unique problems specific to those platforms,” the release of both console versions has been delayed from its initial date. The announcement doesn’t reveal a specific date, but says that the delay is expected to be “about six months.” As a result of the unexpected delay, Zenimax is offering players the option to start playing now on the PC and transfer their characters to either the Xbox One or PS4 when the console edition is released.

Additionally, players who purchase the PC version of Elder Scrolls Online will have an opportunity to shift their copies over to either console for $20 alongside an additional 30 days of game time.

Perfect World Opens Console Division

Neverwinter_Screenshot_JeweloftheNorth_012513_jpeg2

Those of you who own a Playstation 4 or follow MMOs are likely already aware of the free to play MMOs that are either already available or are coming soon on the system. Perfect World Entertainment currently offers Blacklight Retribution on the console, and recently announced that it is opening a division of the company solely for the development of console titles. In a press release put out today by Perfect World Entertainment, the company did not detail which titles would be brought to current and next-gen systems, but described “current and future games.” Could we see Neverwinter on consoles? Perhaps.

Perfect World’s CEO Alan Chen had the following to say:

“Perfect World Entertainment has long been the leader in free-to-play PC titles. Bringing our titles to consoles is a natural progression for us, and we can’t wait to set a new standard for console MMORPGs and other genres.”

More information is set to come in 2014.
