[Community] Are Boxers Harshing Your Ragefire Buzz?

EQ000001

(Community is a weekly column discussing ongoing events in various MMOs. Agree or disagree, we’d like to hear what you think in the comments below.)

Everquest’s Ragefire progression server has been up for less than a week, actually it’s been up for about four days, but if you’ve been trying to make headway in the game it might feel more like a week. Unfortunately, parts of the community are at each other’s throats over the issue of people not being able to play, and who is responsible for clogging Ragefire and camping its mobs. Daybreak has been working to alleviate problems without trampling on either side’s shoes, and the fighting is getting worse.

The culprit of choice for Ragefire are the boxers, players who run two or more copies of Everquest simultaneously, either controlling accounts separately or using programs like isboxer to direct multiple characters at once. A distinction between boxing and botting is important, since botting is unattended and boxing is one player actually operating multiple accounts. Boxing has become very common over the years in Everquest, as computers have expanded and become capable of running multiple instances of the game very easily. For Ragefire, where getting a spot on the server has been rather difficult, members of the community are understandably angry over long queues that are at least partially the fault of single players taking upwards of six or more slots.

With Ragefire requiring a subscription, it’s also easy to see why Daybreak doesn’t want to tread on the shoes of someone paying $15 per month, per account.

On Daybreak’s end, the company has implemented an afk timer that apparently goes up and down based on how much demand there is to get into the server. I haven’t been able to test this out myself, but reports from other players indicate that the timer can swing as high as over an hour to as low as under ten minutes. In addition, Daybreak cobbled together a server queue that allows players to get their place in during peak hours and alt-tab out of the client or go into chat without worrying about the system automatically logging them out.

How do you feel about boxers in Everquest?

[ArcheAge] Trion Worlds Unveils Non-Traditional Server Mergers

ARCHEAGE 2014-10-06 10-34-24-58

Ask Trion Worlds if they are merging servers and the answer is absolutely not, in the traditional sense at least. According to Trion’s community manager Scapes, server transfers are inhibited by the fact that the process currently needs to be done manually. An automated version is currently in development and will hopefully be available later this year, allowing characters and even entire servers to be transferred.

More details will become available at some point, just don’t call it a merger.

We do not currently have plans to merge servers in the traditional sense. Instead, we plan something altogether different and look forward to revealing the plan as soon as we work out the details.

Linda “Brasse” Carlson has also been making the rounds on ArcheAge’s forums to remind players that the merger will be “non-traditional.”

Those are the other obvious questions. I also realize that it’s hard to pose questions before we put up at least a bare-bones FAQ on our plans. Bear with us. We’ll be talking about this with all our fellow players for MONTHS before it comes to pass, and your input is important.

Zenimax Disabling Accounts With Fraudulent Keys

eso 2014-04-20 15-54-36-52

If you purchased The Elder Scrolls Online through grey market resellers like G2A or similar websites, you may be the unlucky recipient of a notice that your account has been disabled until you purchase a legitimate copy of the game. Zenimax Studios has been identifying fraudulent cards and disabling the accounts using them, with users receiving an email with the subject ”
Your ESOTU Account Needs Action.”

The good news is that Zenimax isn’t banning any accounts, simply revoking their access as though the game was never purchased. Players are being notified in advance of their accounts being locked, with a note that none of their progress is being deleted should they opt to buy the game from a reputable source in the future.

We want to remind gamers to shop wisely and only purchase online keys from a reputable source. Fraudulently obtained keys obtained via Steam and then re-sold via third-party websites is a violation of both our and Steam’s Terms of Service. We will be deactivating all game accounts created with such stolen keys starting on Tuesday, May 26th. Affected users will receive an email with instructions on how to regain access to their game account via a valid game purchase.

Grey market resellers have become a growing pain in the side of publishers, not only because many engage in credit card fraud to buy and quickly resell keys, but that the only way of recouping their losses is to take the unpopular action of removing the accounts from customers who may have been unaware that their purchase wasn’t legitimate.

Lord of the Rings Online Server Mergers Coming

press_pack_big_battles_01

As part of Turbine’s list of updates going live this summer, Lord of the Rings Online will see a number of worlds shuttered with players given the opportunity to transfer their characters and guilds. Updates to the data centers will allow character transfers from inside the game client rather than on the website, as well as supporting Kins disbanding on one server and reforming on another with their status and achievements intact.

You will have 3 months past the date of the launch of the new service in which to continue playing on the smaller worlds while planning and or making your move to a larger server. After that point your characters will always be available to be transferred to one of the remaining worlds, however you will only be able to log in to the remaining servers. More details on all of this as well as detailed instructions on how to move will be provided in email, in-game mail as well as website and forums in the months to come.

More information is set to come in the following months.

Flying May Not Be Coming Back, Says Blizzard

draenor

World of Warcraft’s 6.2 patch brings players to a revamped Tanaan Jungle, but if you were hoping that the update would finally unlock flying in Draenor’s zones, you’re out of luck. Flying isn’t coming to Draenor in patch 6.2, and like never will, according to a Polygon review with Blizzard’s lead designer Ion Hazzikostas. Blizzard’s apparent regret over flying mounts has been well known for a couple of years now, going back to 2013 when then lead system designer Greg Street stated that he would not add flying mounts, given another chance.

“There’s more room for exploration, for secrets, for discovery and overall immersion in the world. At this point, we feel that outdoor gameplay in World of Warcraft is ultimately better without flying. We’re not going to be reintroducing the ability to fly in Draenor, and that’s kind of where we’re at going forward.”

While flying mounts aren’t completely ruled out of future content, but that they would likely be added in a more restricted way that makes sense in the context of the zone.

Star Vault Posts Higher Q1 Earnings

Screenshot 2015-05-22 at 11.12.56 AM

Star Vault has released their first quarter sales for 2015, and the results are rather positive. While sales are down from where they were last year, net sales increased over the fourth quarter to $68 thousand. Likewise, Star Vault’s net loss fell substantially from over $100 thousand in Q4 to $61 thousand this quarter.

According to Star Vault’s report, the number of subscribers remained about the same over last quarter.

CEO Henrik Nystrom’s note:

We have recruited a further enhancement to our team, in the form of an experienced programmer with great interest in game development. This gives us the resources for the Steam release. Our new additions will work in several areas of development in Mortal Online – it’s great with fresh eyes coming from outside that can give feedback on what areas can be improved. We also have an additional encoder remotely in the US who now helps us with GUI and flash programming.

En Masse Entertainment has declared TERA to be the #1 MMO on Steam, based on peak concurrent players compared to other MMOs on the digital platform.

Since launching on Steam on May 5, 2015, TERA has seen explosive growth, with new and returning players pushing the total number of accounts to over 4.5 million in North America and 20 million worldwide! And those players have been busy—killing an average of 6 million BAMs (Big-Ass Monsters) and clearing 70,000 dungeons a day.
