Ubisoft Q1 Sales: Money Stuff And Things Like That

TheDivision 2016-02-20 09-09-09-82

(Editor’s note: Ubisoft’s Q1 fiscal year runs from April through June. Q2 begins July and ends at the end of September.)

Ubisoft has revealed record high player engagement during the first quarter of 2016, following the launch of The Division and Rainbow Six Siege. Sales for the period amounted to approximately $153 million USD, exceeding expectations by a fair margin (expected: $125 mil).

Sales show a trend toward consumers ditching physical media, as digital sales amounted to 75% of the overall take. This, compared to last year’s share of 56%, marks a major shift in consumer spending habits.

“Our solid figures for the first quarter of 2016-17 have confirmed the excellent digital trends and demonstrate we are successfully executing our strategic plan. Player engagement levels reached record highs during the period, fueled by the success of The Division, Rainbow Six Siege and Hungry Shark World.”

The French developer/publisher is gearing up for a busy release schedule including but not limited to South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Just Dance 2017, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Steep, and Watch Dogs 2. Ubisoft expects lower sales in the second quarter, likely due to a sparse release schedule (Grow Up and Champions of Anteria).

PSA: Steam Sale Starts This Week

Steam-Logo

MMO Fallout would like to issue a public service announcement to remind our viewers that the Steam Summer Sale begins June 23rd and runs through July 4th. In preparation for the sale, we’ve listed some tips to help you spend wisely.

  • Because of Steam refunds, daily sales are no longer a thing. Once a game is on sale it will stay at that price for the duration of the sale.
  • Games purchased during Steam sales are still eligible for refunds. Same rules apply, two weeks and under two hours of gameplay.
  • If you bought a game in the past week, played past the refund period, and it goes on sale, try emailing Steam customer service and ask for the sale price. It isn’t 100% guaranteed to work, but it has for some in the past.
  • Buy Steam Wallet cards: Thanks to an incredible Steam sale back in 2013 where I inexplicably wound up spending about $200, I now buy Steam wallet cards and remove the credit card off of my account during Steam sales. We all like to think of ourselves as fully in control until those 75% markers start showing up.
  • Build a wishlist: Pick the games you really want and throw them on a wishlist. There will be tens of thousands of Steam games on sale and not nearly enough time to wade through them.
  • Steam Bundles: It used to be that Steam bundles were worthless if you owned one or more games in the collection. It is now possible for publishers to pro-rate their collections, so you’ll still get the sale price minus the cost of whatever games in the collection you already own.
  • Pricing Errors: Guaranteed to happen once or twice over the course of the sale due to some publisher placing the decimal point in the wrong spot. This happens right when the sales change and are fixed within minutes, so grab them fast. A few lucky users managed to pick up Tropico 4 for less than a dollar a couple of years back.
  • Trading cards can be obtained in your games and sold for cash money (Steam wallet cash money anyhow). In most games, you can simply idle and gather up their trading cards to sell on the open Steam market. Ten cents here, twenty cents there, it adds up over time and means your games can effectively fund other games.
  • Check the competition: Just because a game is on sale on Steam doesn’t mean you’re getting the best price. Before you hit that buy button, check out https://isthereanydeal.com/ for competing prices. You may just get a better deal.

If you have any tips of your own for Steam shopping, leave a comment in the box below and let us know.

Turbine Disabling Lord of the Rings Sales Through May

press_pack_big_battles_01

If you were looking at picking up anything in Lord of the Rings Online this week, you’re out of luck. In a post on the official forums, Turbine announced that sales for the nine year old MMO will be halted for a week on Tubine’s store as well as through Steam and Amazon. The announcement comes with a rather ominous “plan” to turn the features back on in June.

We want to announce that at 12:00pm EDT 5/20/2016, we’ll be temporarily interrupting our DLC/Offer sales on Steam, store.turbine.com, and Amazon. We plan to turn these back on June 1st, 2016.

Speculation is rampant on why sales would need to be suspended for a full week, with all likelihood pointing to an overhaul to mirror the company’s shift in focus from big expansions to smaller content packs.

Line of Defense Leaving Steam

LOD_3

3000AD has announced that Line of Defense is leaving Steam, citing trolling and harassment from the community. In a post on the Steam forums, Derek Smart points to the lack of developer control when it comes to review bombing, the lack of proper moderators employed by Valve, and a lack of control over ratings and comments.

“You can flag a comment that blatantly breaks the guidelines. Then you get to hope that any action is taken. As I type this, there are a few of those on the LOD store page which not only have personal attacks, external attack links, entire essays attacking me – and NOTHING about the game.”

As a result, Line of Defense will no longer be sold on Steam in the coming future. Players who already bought the game will receive a second copy to be used since the Steam version will stop being updated. Instead, customers will access the game via Playfab.

According to Smart, this is not a guarantee that Line of Defense will never return to the platform.

“We won’t be the first developer or publisher to pull a game from Steam. And others have pulled a game, then brought it back later.”

Line of Defense is currently in Steam Early Access. It carries a “mostly negative” rating and is played by an average of .4 players in the last month [Source: Steam Charts].

Early Access Fraudsters: Asteroids: Outpost

ss_4288f731964aaf18fc726086e1f154ea1ea4cb31

Generally you’d expect an Early Access Fraudster article to be about an indie developer, but the subject of today’s piece is none of than Atari itself, developed by the applicably named Salty Games, and it goes by the name Asteroids: Outpost. Asteroids is a modern day spinoff of the classic arcade title, a combination of Minecraft and DayZ that challenged players with setting up a base and defending it both from falling asteroids and the attacks of other players. It sounded like a great idea on paper, in practice it wasn’t so great.

Its continued sale is also outright fraud.

If you go on the Steam store page, the game currently holds a mostly negative rating with the top reviews imploring anyone who reads it not to throw down the $29.99 suggested retail price and to avoid the game and company at all costs. Despite the game still being available for purchase, according to Steam reviews the servers haven’t been in operation going back as far as November if not further, and there has been no contact or discussion from the Salty Games team. The official website is dead, all of the social media accounts are empty, and the game is completely unplayable.

In short: The project’s been abandoned, and either no one has bothered to tell Valve, or they just aren’t listening.

Judging by the forums, and the number of people who claim to have flagged the title over the months with no response, the latter seems more likely. Games suddenly shutting down without any notice from the developers isn’t new, as I said before, but this is something you’d expect out of an independent developer and not someone with the backing of a name like Atari. Granted, the Atari that exists today is a shell of the former corporation, one that mostly exists to license its properties out to the few companies that will buy them, but that is neither here nor there.

I tried contacting Salty Games before this article went up, the website is down and unfortunately I can’t find a single way to get in touch with the developers. The Asteroids: Outpost Steam account hasn’t been logged into in over two hundred days, and the group’s Facebook account hasn’t been posted on since last April. Salty Games doesn’t have a company website and Atari still acts like the game is still on sale on their own. If the studio has shut down, it hasn’t been announced and Google is turning up no results.

In addition, I contacted Atari’s press people to try and figure out what was going on and what happened to Salty Games. They haven’t responded. We also contacted Valve who, similarly, did not respond.

At the very least, we can sleep easy knowing that no one seems to actually be buying the game. After all, virtually no one bought it when the servers were live. According to Steam Charts, Asteroids peaked at 42 back in 2015 and hasn’t gone above 2 since. Judging by that success, it seems possible that Salty Games was shut down so fast that no one had time to shut down the Steam store page.

Regardless of their refund policy, Valve still has an obligation to remove this item from the store. It is, in all definitions of the words, abandoned and forgotten by a developer that may not even exist anymore. It died in early access yet continues selling tickets to a show that will never be performed.

Play Elder Scrolls Online For Free, Unless You Can’t

eso 2014-04-20 15-54-36-52

Elder Scrolls Online is free this weekend for anyone who has yet to make the purchase. Well, not everyone. Xbox One players should have no problem just getting in and starting once the weekend goes live, but everyone else is going to have some issues. First, Playstation 4 players can’t get in on the weekend at all. PC players are going to have to procure a key that will be available from various partner websites.

The free weekend runs from the 10th until the 14th this month. The lack of Playstation 4 access has been blamed on “technical issues” and the company hopes to have a free weekend for the platform when those issues are resolved. For others, the game is currently 60% off with discounts on cash shop currency.

Not Massive: Direct2Drive’s “Trigger Warning” Sale Week

song

Direct2Drive is running a sale this week dubbed the “Trigger Warning Week,” guaranteed to save between 50% and 80% on all titles. The library of games promises to be the “most inclusive, diverse, & empowering titles” available on PC. Among the list of games on sale, gamers can find Psychonauts, several Bioshock titles, Metro, Saint’s Row the Third, Borderlands, Deus Ex, among others.

While there are plenty of great games to grab, Duke Nukem Forever at its 75% off, $4.99 price tag should be considered armed and still overpriced for its quality.
