Human Head Studios Sued For Abandoning Rune II

Human Head Studios will always hold a special place in many hearts as the company that made Prey 2006. About three weeks ago, the company launched Rune II on the Epic Game Store. Set in Norse mythology during the end times, Rune II puts you in the shoes of a warrior chosen by the gods to end Ragnarok and save Midgard from the treachery of that trickster Loki.

Rune II is also the focus of a lawsuit alleging fraud, contract breach, and fraudulent concealment, among other charges. The lawsuit stems from the events that occurred after Rune II launched on the Epic Game Store. Right after, as literally a day later they announced that Human Head Studios would immediately shut down with its developers transferred to a new studio under Bethesda’s management. Rune II’s publisher and financier Ragnarok Game LLC is understandably not happy with this turn of events, especially since Human Head is allegedly refusing to turn over source code and assets that Ragnarok now legally owns, in order to allow continued support of the game.

A notice was posted to the Rune II forums discussing the details of the lawsuit.

“Since Human Head’s sudden closure, announcement, and discovering the active concealment of their acquisition, we have repeatedly requested access to the final launch build source code and RUNE II game assets. This is so we can continue to support, update, and execute future DLC for our community. As part of the publishing agreement on RUNE II, Ragnarok Game LLC has paid for the development of these assets and is the rightful owner of them. After repeated refusals by Human Head to produce these assets, we’ve had no choice but to file a legal complaint in order to obtain the RUNE II game assets. We have exhausted all possible options before getting to this point.  This is not the step we wanted to take, but it is necessary in order to fulfill our promises to our community.”

The lawsuit itself which can be read online accuses Ben Gokey, Christopher Rhinehart, and Paul MacArthur, all Human Head Principals, of intentionally damaging the Rune II brand and image by failing to perform and then conspiring to abandon the property, with the studio intentionally closing when it did to maximize that damage.

“In summary: (a) Human Head entered into a long-term agreement with Ragnarok — the whole goal of which was to launch Rune II and to provide the necessary support for its commercial success, (b) Human Head accepted millions of dollars in payment, but failed to perform, (c) instead of curing its deficient work, Human Head secretly conspired to abandon Ragnarok and the Rune II community in an apparent attempt to defraud and harm Ragnarok and the game, and (d) Human Head timed the unveiling of its plan to cause maximum damage. By this time, Ragnarok had learned its lesson. Ragnarok refused to be blackmailed and pay the ransom, repeatedly requesting the return of its property. What did Ben Gokey, Christopher Rhinehart, and Paul MacArthur do? They made unauthorized alterations to the code and attempted (unsuccessfully) to make public the unauthorized changes. Of course, since Human Head no longer existed, Gokey, Rhinehart, and MacArthur were not altering the code on behalf of Human Head. Regardless, alter the code they did. “

The lawsuit goes on to accuse Human Head of holding code hostage as ransom for monetary payments, as well as accusing the studio of attempting to upload altered versions of the game to the Epic Game Store despite demands to cease. If even half of the lawsuit is true, it’s a pretty damning story against Human Head heads Gokey, Rinehart, and MacArthur.

Gustavo Canine Games Blames Network For Fraudulent Copyright Claims

Source: Twitter

A growing number of reports have been coming in over the last couple of days of Youtube creators seeing their Let’s Play videos being hit with copyright strikes, with the source of the strike being an entity that definitely does not own said copyrights. The strikes appear to be coming from a “Gustavo Canine Games,” a Brazilian Youtube let’s play content creator.

The real culprit appears to be GCG’s network owner, Illustrated Sound Music. Illustrated Sound Music is going off the deep end and claiming ownership of video game footage, something that it definitely does not own. As a result, users are having videos of their own Let’s Plays flagged as identical and having the videos automatically copyright claimed. Which again, ISM definitely does not own the copyright to.

Gustavo Canine Games has posted an apology to his Facebook page and notes that his lawyer has gotten involved.

“I got in contact with the network they claim to be solving.. off my lawyer against the network, I’m being accused by the world for something I didn’t do ;; honestly I don’t know if I’ll keep this channel for much fear, it’s being hell”

Illustrated Sound Music themselves have also apologized, blaming the copyright sweep on videos being enabled for content ID matching that absolutely should not have been enabled. They have promised to release the claims in the next 24-48 hours.

Affected Youtubers are encouraged to dispute any copyright claim and not to wait in the hopes that ISM eventually gets around to releasing the claims.

Video: Shadow of the Cute Raider Wins Awards

Square Enix putting out a spoof of its own trailer starring cats and dogs confuses me. On one hand, it’s absolutely adorable. On the other hand, it’s a jarring mirror to a series that features rather brutal death scenes of human Lara Croft drowning and getting graphically impaled on spikes.

Shadow of the Cute Raider took home a gold at the Clio awards and happens to coincide with the release of the Shadow of the Tomb Raider definitive edition. The definitive edition includes the base game and all seven post-launch DLC packs.

Black Desert: Shai & Mystic Class Come To PS4

The latest update for Black Desert on the Playstation 4 is here. Today’s update introduces the Shai and Mystic classes. The Shai is a support class that focuses on avoiding damage and aiding allies. The Mystic on the other hand is a powerful brawler that pummels her opponents into the ground using martial-arts skills.

Also included in today’s update is the introduction of dark rifts. Dark rifts appear randomly throughout the world and can spawn powerful bosses that in turn drop powerful gear upon defeat. Players will need to have completed Journey to Mediah quests in order to see dark rifts on the map.

Shai Skills

  • One-Two-Three – Shai’s basic attack using the Florang, which can be thrown up to three times.
  • Eat This! – Shai recklessly throws her Florang at her enemies. This skill has the longest range of all the Florang skills.
  • Come Out, Come Out – Shai reveals hidden enemies around her by waving around her Vitclari.
  • Over Here! – Shai creates a shielded area that protects her allies.
  • Play Dead – Shai falls to the floor, tricking enemies into believing that she is no longer a threat. Monsters can see through this ruse, but players on the other hand…

Mystic Skills

  • Wolf’s Frenzy – The Mystic hides in the shadows to unleash a barrage of hits against her enemies.
  • Rage Hammer – Unleashes her inner power into a massive attack onto the ground, knocking down foes.
  • Soul Basher – The Mystic performs a flurry of kicks that deals damage to her enemies.

Planetside Arena: The Launchpad For Daybreak’s Next Catastrophe

Is it time for Daybreak to give up on the ghost on Planetside Arena? It was time when someone at Daybreak said “let’s make our next game a Planetside battle royale title.”

At any given moment, there are more people browsing MMO Fallout than there are playing Planetside Arena, which really isn’t saying much since the 24 hour peak for the title was 12 people. Under normal circumstances I might use this space to say “I feel bad for Daybreak,” but it’s hard to considering that the idea of a Planetside-themed battle royale game is something that was pretty much universally mocked and rejected by the community long before Planetside Arena was even announced. Hell, you can probably go back to well before the concept was even in the pre-production stages by Daybreak and find people mockingly predicting that Daybreak would hastily shove out another battle royale game while their existing title in H1Z1 was already floundering.

But Planetside: Arena isn’t just a big disappointment, it is the launching pad through which Daybreak plans to fire off its next disaster: Planetside 3.

Granted, this theory assumes that Daybreak will survive long enough or have the capacity to develop a whole new game. Planetside 3 as Daybreak stands now will be a disaster, and I will eat a Little Caesar’s pizza if Planetside 3 launches and is somehow a big hit. For charity. Planetside 2 isn’t totally dead, but it isn’t doing great. The Steam version seems to hold around a thousand players during the good hours and while there are battles to be had on the game world, as pared down as it is a lot of the world is just dead. Quiet, nobody there, outposts clean for the picking.

So what does Daybreak want to do with Planetside 3? Outside of fracturing the community, they envision a future where there is a full-fledged galactic war in an expansive galaxy. That’s right, taking the stragglers from Planetside 2 as well as some stragglers and throwing them into an even larger room where they can run around and not really collide with one another. From a technical standpoint the idea of players having battles on a giant galaxy-sized world is impressive. Unfortunately as I said with 2019’s battle royale games boasting 1,000 players per server, your technology is completely worthless if there is nobody actually filling those servers.

Thankfully I moonlight as an unpaid consultant (assuming appreciation is a currency), and I’m willing to offer my two dollars. Foremost, if Daybreak is going to create this massive world, they need to fill it with living things. Am I saying that Daybreak should go the Fortnite route and populate the maps with somewhat intelligent bots? Not really. I’m suggesting to look back at titles like Titanfall or Tabula Rasa, games that threw in grunts for players to shoot at and feel like they were still contributing to the group even if they weren’t that great at the PvP side of the game.

Let’s take the same scenario twice: I’m rolling around taking bases off in the middle of bumfudge nowhere in Planetside 3. I come up on a small base, there are no players there. I stroll around the empty base for about ten minutes and take over the control nodes, take over the base, I’m friggin bored. Now take the same scenario; I roll up on a base and there are guards present. They’re not really difficult to kill because they’re not as smart as real players, but it does prolong the encounter and I actually have to do something other than notice how empty the game world is. I might even get careless and die once or twice. As I take over the base I’m gaining experience, maybe unlocking something for my gun, and the boring busy work feels a little less boring and the world feels more alive.

Just a thought, I could be completely wrong.

Super Rewards Is Dead, RuneScape Survey Takers Grieve

It is with great sorrow that I post the news at 1:30a.m. on Tuesday December 3 that Super Rewards, the place most of you RuneScape players went to for (occasionally) free keys in return for signing your name, email, and phone number to some of the internet’s shadiest scam artists, has disappeared.

If you head over to RuneScape and try to earn some free loot box keys with the Super Rewards service, you’ll be met with the message above. Now if you want your identity stolen in return for some RuneScape keys you’ll need to go with Jagex’s surviving partner, Peanut Labs. Peanuts, an apt description of the size of the payout.
