Planetside Arena Isn’t Dead After All, Early Access Coming September 19

Planetside Arena isn’t dead. After six months of complete silence, Daybreak Game Company has announced that the title will be entering early access on September 19. Daybreak posted a new dev blog noting that the early launch will contain a squads mode (12 players per squad) and teams (3 players) in 300-person matches, as well as three classes and an extensive motor pool of vehicles. More content of course will be released after this initial launch period. Naturally.

We’ve always thought of PlanetSide as an evolving saga that will eventually escalate beyond Auraxis to interstellar war, and PlanetSide Arena is where it will start. Expanded factions, new weapons and vehicles, battles on distant alien planets (and the space in between) are all part of our vision.

Over the next year we will begin to explore a future that will see an evolution of the empires and introduce new ways to wage all-out planetary warfare, filled with new game modes and classic favorites reimagined, all at a scale that can only be created through a PlanetSide experience.

Everyone Missed It: Daybreak Permanently Closes Everquest Player Studio

Since Daybreak has fallen out of the public spotlight, nobody notices when they shut things down anymore.

Flashback to March 1 and you will find producer Nick Silva stating that the player studio is absolutely not dead, and will in fact return better than ever.

“In the meantime, we will be evaluating options for overhauling the Player Studio site with the intention of allowing broader categories of submissions and a more streamlined submission process.”

Unfortunately the player studio is yet another reminder that anything coming out of Daybreak should be taken with a grain of salt. In an announcement on June 22 that absolutely nobody noticed because not a single gaming website (including this one) reported on it, Daybreak quietly took the Everquest/Everquest 2 Player Studio out back and gave it the Old Yeller treatment. The announcement is as follows (their strikethroughs, not mine).

Over the years, EverQuest II players have remained some of the most dedicated in any virtual world. Since Player Studio first launched, we have constantly found ourselves impressed and humbled by the boundless creative talents of our players. Over the years, members of our community have created countless new items that help bring even more color to the world of Norrath. After nearly 6 years, the Player Studio program has concluded for both EverQuest and EverQuest II. Player Studio items that have been previously approved will be released and remain in-game, but players will not have the ability to submit new items. We’d like to thank each of you for sharing your creations with us.

This sunsetting makes Planetside 2 the only game remaining with Studio support, and the term “support” might be generous. The Planetside 2 sector of the Player Studio is performing fantastically, with the creator forums seeing an entire thirteen posts over the entirety of 2019. One of the posts is lamenting the fact that the user’s creation has been in limbo for over a year with nobody bothering to look at a simple decal submission. There has been roughly one developer post on the entire studio forums in the last two years, and that was to announce the initial suspension of new creators.

Daybreak Laid Off More People

Daybreak Game Company may be currently best known for their string of layoffs, and it appears that the pendulum is coming around again for another swipe.

The folks over at Massively OP noticed that multiple developers on the PC version of H1Z1, known lovingly as Z1 Battle Royale, are no longer with Daybreak and NantG. This includes Z1’s lead game designer who posted about the layoffs just a few hours ago. Massively OP was able to confirm via Twitter that Z1’s combat designer was also laid off, as well as the community representative.

The move comes not even a week after NantG posted an announcement on its Twitter account that they are in planning mode and “discussing many things.”

Neither the Daybreak Game Company or NantG Mobile have made an official statement. Perhaps ironically, Z1 Battle Royale has experienced a notable increase in players following a massive decline over the past year.

Daybreak Alters Planetside Arena Launch Plans, Hitting Playstation 4

Daybreak’s upcoming spinoff Planetside Arena is changing course. Somewhat.

In an announcement posted on the official website this week, Daybreak thanked its closed beta testers for their invaluable feedback, and announced that after much consideration the PC-only release will be postponed. The good news is that this delay is to make way for the Playstation 4 version which will launch alongside the PC version this summer. Unfortunately this does mean that the founders beta will be cancelled and all buyers of Planetside Arena on Steam are being refunded their purchases.

The beta program will be extended ahead of launch later this year.

Daybreak Game Company Announces Planetside Arena

Daybreak Game Company today finally unveiled their next title: Planetside Arena. Set to launch in early 2019, Planetside Arena is a massive-scale sci-fi arena FPS set in the Planetside universe. Arena will launch with three battle royale modes in season one: A 250 vs 250 player experience titled Massive Clash with solo and team modes. Three initial classes will be available including the Engineer, Assault, and Medic, each with a personal vehicle, jetpack, and unique abilities that can be upgraded throughout the match.

Planetside Arena is currently available for pre-order on Steam, with launch on January 29, 2019.

Daybreak Games Raises Over $40k For Rady’s Children’s Hospital

Daybreak Game Company today announced that they have raised over $40,000 USD for Rady’s Children’s Hospital in San Diego, California. The money was raised during the developer’s first participation in Extra LIfe, a charity aimed at raising money for hospitals in the Children’s Miracle Network.
