Old School RuneScape Suffers Major Technical Difficulties Over Weekend

(Update: Old School RuneScape underwent maintenance this morning that appears to have fixed the issue)

If you have tried to play Old School RuneScape this weekend, especially over mobile, odds are your experience has been less than desirable. Absolutely horrible more like.

Long story short, Old School RuneScape has been suffering issues causing the game to be completely unplayable for many people on mobile and the official client and Jagex has yet to figure out what is causing the problem or the million dollar question of how to fix it. The last update to an alert posted on December 7 notes that the issue is still being looked into, but as of midnight on December 9 the problem has yet to be fixed.

The issues are still actively being investigated and resolved. We’ve also edited the article to reflect the issues that some players are experiencing with the desktop client. We’re also aware of issues affecting some Old School RuneScape players when attempting to connect to the official Old School RuneScape game client. These players are experiencing long loading times, with ‘Loading configuration’, ‘Loading application resources’ and ‘Loading application’ all taking a long time. Our SysAdmin and our Game Engine teams are investigating and are working on resolving the issues as a matter of priority.

In addition to the connection problems, players who have been able to log in have reported major server lag with some servers suffering more than others.

Z1 Battle Royale Will Shut Down South American Servers

Z1 Battle Royale, the PC shooter by Daybreak Game Company, is coming to an end on season 3 and bringing big changes with it. Chief among today’s announcements includes the reveal that Daybreak is shutting down Z1’s South America servers on April 30 to coincide with the end of season 3. This move will consolidate American players into the North American servers, hopefully speeding up queue times and ensuring the servers are populated going into season 4.

Z1’s traffic has been on a steady decline over the past couple of years, with Daybreak making changes in response to the smaller population.

En Masse Entertainment Will Close 22 TERA Console Servers

TERA publisher En Masse Entertainment this week announced a major culling to the game’s servers on Xbox One and Playstation 4. On August 21 of this year, both versions will see their server list massively reduced from 22 servers to seven. The remaining servers break down to four for PS4 (2 NA/2 EU), and 3 for Xbox One (2 NA/ 1 EU).

The official date is August 21, 2018, but because the merge could take up to 12 hours, we’re going to start the merge on August 20, 2018 at 9 p.m. PDT. During this time, the servers will not be accessible.

PC mergers are coming later this year.

Exploit Knocks Secret World Legends Into Extended Downtime

What originally began as a simple maintenance downtime has resulted in the Secret World Legends servers being offline for much of the day, with services now expected to resume at 5pm eastern. The downtime originates from an exploit discovered in the game that allowed players to generate mass quantities of currency. As a result, Funcom has taken the servers down for an extended period of time to figure out what to do about the exploit and to deal with the spread of bad currency being injected into the economy.

We’re terribly sorry for any inconvenience caused by today’s extended maintenance. As some of you may know by now, there was an issue discovered with the Exchange and it’ll take time to come up with a proper solution to both the underlying issue and the effects it may have caused. Today’s maintenance period has been extended until at least 17:00 EDT / 21:00 UTC (please correct me if the conversion is wrong somehow) and we’ll try to keep you in the loop on any other developments. Patch notes will be posted on the official website at www.secretworldlegends.com once the servers are back up.

While the exploit itself wasn’t dealt with until this downtime, Funcom reacted quickly after learning of its existence and was able to disable to auction house to avoid further complications. For now, the servers aren’t expected to come back up until 5pm at the earliest.

WoW Vanilla Server Demands Resurface Ahead of Blizzcon

draenor

Blizzcon is right around the corner, and while eyes may be directed on upcoming content for Blizzard’s many titles, whether or not Diablo IV will be a thing, and if Blizzard realizes that everyone already knows about Sombra, others are looking to the past. More specifically, a new petition has surfaced asking Blizzard to give consideration to vanilla servers for World of Warcraft. The petition was started by Mark Kern, a controversial figure, ex-World of Warcraft developer, and founder of Red 5 Studios.

Kern’s petition has drawn some criticism over asking players to bring up Legacy at panels during the convention, despite Blizzard’s previous statement that vanilla servers would not be part of the convention schedule. Blizzard’s past statements have offered a glimmer of hope into the prospect of “pristine” servers (not legacy), however the company has been silent about any concrete plans. Whether or not the company will reveal anything more detailed will need to be seen.

In Plain English: Bassett V. Electronic Arts Dismissed

bassett

It’s been over a year since we last checked in on the curious case of Justin Bassett and Electronic Arts, so a brief history may be in order:

Justin Bassett sued Electronic Arts over the company shutting down their game servers even though the games are still available in stores with online play advertised on the box. EA attempted to take the case into arbitration, citing their EULA, and Bassett argued that the arbitration clause was not valid as it was added later on. EA argued that Bassett agreed to the new EULA when he attempted to log into the online servers. Last year, the judge sided with Electronic Arts and threw the case into arbitration.

As I said back then, we will probably never know what the final ruling was as arbitration results are almost always sealed to the public. What we do know is that, as of last month, the case has been dismissed with prejudice.

Plaintiff Justin T. Bassett (“Plaintiff”) and defendant Electronic Arts Inc., the parties to the above-captioned action, stipulate and agree, pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 41(a)(1)(A)(ii), that Plaintiff hereby does and shall voluntarily dismiss the above-captioned action, and all of the claims within it, with prejudice.

What does that mean? Dismissal with prejudice bars Bassett from bringing an action on the same claim in the future.

Everquest 2 To Merge Servers

Everquest_II_Age_of_Discovery_Logo

Daybreak Game Company has announced that servers for Everquest II will be merged at some point in the near future. In the latest producer letter, Holly Longdale announced that servers will be merged ahead of upcoming cross-server dungeon tech, with more details to follow in the coming months.

We’ll give you specific dates as we get closer. This is very challenging work that will branch off from our Cross-Server Dungeon work. Luckily, what we plan to do for true Cross-Server Dungeons & Battlegrounds logically helps us merge characters to new servers. We’ve already had our incredible coders working on the foundation of cross-server processes for a few months already. Our database changes earlier this year were the first step.

Everquest 2 players can also look forward to time-locked progression servers.

The EFF Wants DMCA Protection For Abandoned Games

playstationnow610

When the servers shut down for your favorite games, often times players find themselves out of luck and with a product that is no longer usable. To make matters worse, attempts to recover the game by setting up private servers or releasing a program to circumvent the now-useless DRM, run the risk of being met by the publisher’s legal team.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has submitted comments to the Copyright Office asking for an exemption to Section 1201 of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.

Game developers and distributors don’t run servers forever, and often shut them off when player numbers dwindle. Having player communities step in to preserve their games is a win for everyone. However, Section 1201 creates chilling effects that keep this from happening. And for games without dedicated programmers who are willing to take legal risks, communities disperse, moving on to new games or just disappearing entirely.

ArcheAge Adding Servers

archeage

ArcheAge’s launch is just a couple of days away, and players are already flooding the head start servers, resulting in long queues and a severe lack of housing space for intrepid explorers. In preparation for the full launch, Trion Worlds today launched two new servers. One server in North America and one in Europe.

Both servers are already up and running.
